"Crack Down On Street Racers"
Ont. Gov't Seeks To Crack Down On Street Racers, Drunk Drivers

Street racers and drunk drivers could face stiffer punishment here than anywhere else in the country if proposed provincial legislation is passed.
The bill, brought forth by Dalton McGuinty's Liberals, would give police power to automatically suspend the driver's licences of offenders for up to a week. They'd also be allowed to seize street racers' vehicles for the same amount of time.
If made law, the plan would hit guilty parties hard in the wallet, with fines of up to $10,000. That would be the highest fine for such an offence in Canada.
McGuinty delivered the message that neither drunk driving nor street racing is acceptable in the province and those who choose to break the law will face major consequences.
"There can be no tolerance in Ontario for people who put other people's lives at risk on our roads," McGuinty said. "We want to make it clear - if you drink and drive or if you street race, you'll pay and the penalty will be tough."
British Columbia and Manitoba have already brought in tougher punishments for such offences. Attorney General Michael Bryant suggests repeat offenders could face losing their wheels forever.
"In order to increase road safety, repeat drunk drivers would now face the possibility of having a civil court order their cars forfeited forever," Bryant said. "We will use every civil and criminal tool available to us to keep Ontario's roads safe from drunk drivers."
The proposed legislation, if passed, would:
Allow the courts to take away vehicles from repeat drinking and driving offenders
Establish an early ignition interlock program for Criminal Code offenders
Increase roadside drivers licence suspensions for drunk drivers
Take drivers licences away from street racers and increase fines

i think DIU is much scarier than SR... you can never really tell which driver is driving under the influence.... you won't know when they'll lose control of the wheel and smash into the innocent driver nearby... but atleast if you see SR, you back off

I have to agree with the above post but need to add to the fact that a good portion of the time its these 30 to 40 year old guys in their Dodge Chargers, Corvettes etc who think they have something to prove to the 'import kid'

Here in BC if you are got street racing your car is automatically impounded for a month as well as having your licence taken away for the same amount of time. Also, you get a charge which involves a fine and loss of points

This is not intented to start a argument or anything, so here it goes. honda1b6a, u said street racing is for pussies, what do u define as street racing. Guys who go into the back roads and organize races. How about when ur at a set of lights driving home, and u go light to light with some guy, no ones around, just 0-100, is that street racing. Because if u or anyone else defines that light to light street racing, u guys are full of ****. Everyone would do that race, and its still dangerous. Ur going to have a boosted car soon, so ur saying if u had a chance on the street to go light to light with a vette u wouldnt do it, because everyone who boosts or does engine work would do it. And that is still considered street racing in the eyes of the law. I support going to the track a 100%, and by no means am i supporting organized street racing. I just know everyone with anything done to there car, will race on the street or highway if given the chance.

I just hope they can differentiate between those who drive illegally to those who just like to work on cars for hobbie and fun.

everyone..
never..
always...
very powerful words... because they are all encompasing...
those words make your argument weak... and therefore flawed

Nova_Dust, what i meant by that phrase is this. Most guys who do engine swaps, motor work, boost etc., if given the chance will have a little fun on the road. Your on the highway, or like i said light to light and u give the car a push against another car. Because almost everyone, if not everyone with these things done to there car enjoy the speed. There are guys who take the **** way to far though. Doing 200 in and out of cars down hwy 7 doesnt make ur car fast, and isnt having harmless fun, those guys are *** hats. That is the kind of thing that kills people. My point was this, having a little fun on the street is harmless, and everyone will do it, but its still considered racing, and people should remember that. I think there is a thing as a harmless race, guys just take it too far. I truly believe everyone races in one way or another, just some guys realize when to stop and have common sense, which in my eyes is ok, but bottem line is this, anytime u go over the speed limit against another car it is technically still street racing, So to to toss out a comment like "street racers are pussies", or " its only rich kids that do it, in there parent cars" , makes no sense, because like i said , in one way or another eveyone will play a little on the street, some harmlessly, and some with no common sense, but it is all street racing at the end of the day.

"The legislation would give police the power to suspend a suspected streetracer's driver's licence and impound the vehicle for seven days.
The minimum fine for streetracing would jump to $2,000 from $200, while the maximum fine zooms to $10,000 from $1,000. "
