Buying a VW Golf...

I'm buying a VW golf and I'm just wondering what problems to look out for or specific things that tend to go wrong with these cars. I am not getting a diesel (not even sure if the golf comes in dielsel anyways). Any suggestions/past experiences are welcome and very much appreciated.

watch out for electrical problems.... mostly regarding the taillights.

imported_kon-yue 11-Sep-2006 12:54 PM

my friend has a VW and he doesn't like
cuz of the electrical problems he has with it
also he has to take his car in a few times before the dealership fixes it right

Same as above. They tend to have alot of electrical gremlins.
However they are very nice looking cars with a ton of aftermarket support.

What year are you buying?
What kind've Golf?

And everyone said it, Electrical problems with be your main concern, from tail lights, dash light.

LEITNER 11-Sep-2006 04:17 PM

be carefull who you buy from i know a guy who works at vw shop and he told me about places that buy frontend/rearend wrecks and chop off the wrecked end and weld a good one on from another wrecked car. believe it or not.

they are nice cars. You pay to drive a vdub, unlike a civic. Civic are cheap as hell on parts, but vdubs are more....oh well

imported_t_dot_SiR 11-Sep-2006 04:48 PM

all euro cars are costly when it comes to repairing...
again, like everyone said, i would say the same, electrical problem...
i got a friend who has a 2002 golf.. he just sold it, but during the time he had it, he had to bring back to check on the lights, they couldn't find where the problem is after 2 days, and he bring the car in several times to get it check, no solution... electrical problem is a pain in the butt to deal with, and unfortunately, VW is very prone to that kind of problem =(

nonetheless, golf is a very nice car, and if i can afford the maintenance, i wouldn't hestitate on one, especially the new ones GTI looks pretty sick...

which year and model of golf you're aiming for?

imported_plzbeleiveit 11-Sep-2006 07:13 PM

its a damn lemon.

DumbasSi 11-Sep-2006 08:27 PM

I had a few VWs over the years and they all had electrical gremlins. They werenice cars, but such a PITA to maintain. I'd stick with a Honda unless it was a brand new VW with a warranty.

imported_rbjeepthing 12-Sep-2006 01:14 AM

parts are cheap for them if you know where to go. I used to work at ami motorsports we specialized in them. There are alot of myths about them out there.

imported_Anna H 12-Sep-2006 01:20 PM

my winter car is a 1994 Golf CL. It's great cuz they're not tin cans like honda (eek) and they heat up within 5 minutes of driving which is perfect for winter. Golf motors are super durable, I blew mine and was still able to drive it for a week before getting it swapped, unlike my B16 which I spun a bearing and had to get it towed home ASAP. I've got a 1.8L, 8 valve which gives me 450-500km/tank and put in heated GTI seats so my tushy stays even warmer. :)

raj....no way you are selling your sedan

civicnation 12-Sep-2006 09:44 PM

lol, nope not selling the sedan.
electrical problems seem to be an area of concern for me now....
maybe i should rethink the golf purchase

rjngo 12-Sep-2006 09:48 PM

vw's and audi's are plague with that electrical problems both old and new

imported_kungfugrip 12-Sep-2006 09:50 PM

rjngo 12-Sep-2006 09:58 PM

imported_JT_Label 13-Sep-2006 02:35 AM

i say fit!

szuberi 13-Sep-2006 09:55 AM

did you check with any dealership so far about the electrical issues with the new models (im assuming you are considering a new one since you didnt specify that)

ive also read about these issues but only in the old models...the new ones may not have them at all. they are fun cars for sure.

imported_rbjeepthing 13-Sep-2006 12:20 PM

MKII have some dash wire problems. MKIV Jetta's are notorious for their bult trays corroding and melting. 1999.5's MKIV just plain suck. MKIII shifter bushings are poop. Those are my expierences.
