Buying a VW Golf...
I'm buying a VW golf and I'm just wondering what problems to look out for or specific things that tend to go wrong with these cars. I am not getting a diesel (not even sure if the golf comes in dielsel anyways). Any suggestions/past experiences are welcome and very much appreciated.

be carefull who you buy from i know a guy who works at vw shop and he told me about places that buy frontend/rearend wrecks and chop off the wrecked end and weld a good one on from another wrecked car. believe it or not.

all euro cars are costly when it comes to repairing...
again, like everyone said, i would say the same, electrical problem...
i got a friend who has a 2002 golf.. he just sold it, but during the time he had it, he had to bring back to check on the lights, they couldn't find where the problem is after 2 days, and he bring the car in several times to get it check, no solution... electrical problem is a pain in the butt to deal with, and unfortunately, VW is very prone to that kind of problem =(
nonetheless, golf is a very nice car, and if i can afford the maintenance, i wouldn't hestitate on one, especially the new ones GTI looks pretty sick...
which year and model of golf you're aiming for?

my winter car is a 1994 Golf CL. It's great cuz they're not tin cans like honda (eek) and they heat up within 5 minutes of driving which is perfect for winter. Golf motors are super durable, I blew mine and was still able to drive it for a week before getting it swapped, unlike my B16 which I spun a bearing and had to get it towed home ASAP. I've got a 1.8L, 8 valve which gives me 450-500km/tank and put in heated GTI seats so my tushy stays even warmer.

did you check with any dealership so far about the electrical issues with the new models (im assuming you are considering a new one since you didnt specify that)
ive also read about these issues but only in the old models...the new ones may not have them at all. they are fun cars for sure.

MKII have some dash wire problems. MKIV Jetta's are notorious for their bult trays corroding and melting. 1999.5's MKIV just plain suck. MKIII shifter bushings are poop. Those are my expierences.
