No new rider should start out on a bigbike. That's why I myself choice the Katana.
chillinit, even though you got some yrs under you belt be careful on that fireblade, those things are fast.

G2...thats for the advice man.....its true....nobody new riders should ever buy a big bike....the 600 class is even pushing it...especially the R6....anyway....I've riden a 929 cbr for about 2 years now...sweet bike...can wait to see what this 1000 can do......I also rode a hayabusa before...that bike is honestly scary as hell...I left the bike in 6th gear and gassed it..before I knew it I was at about 260-265...and it had soo much more...SCARY BIKE!! to everyone who is thinking about getting a bike...remeber that the greatest danger when riding is other people in there cars....people don't know how to drive and can't see the small profile your bike....be aggressive but also ride smart!! rubber side down!

I guess I am a biker. I don't have a bike now but I've had a Honda Elite, Suzuki Gamma and a Honda CBR. All of them were 250s. Each time, I doubled the number of cylinders (1 to 2 to 4). The CBR had a redline of 18,000 RPM! It was a screamer. I owned it when I lived in Japan.
I'm thinking about another bike but I figure I can just borrow my sister's Ninja 500.
About what G2 wrote, I must admit that I agree with him for once and a new rider should never start with a big and/or street bike. You should expect that you will dump the bike at least once so, the less plastic body work, the less there is to replace.... (I think a Katana is even pushing it).
One thing to keep in mind for the new riders...check out insurance costs. It's not cheap....

Well new rider or not, i guess it all depends on where you're riding it... a huge metro city like toronto with highways everywhere vs. a small little town filled with country roads..
less risk i'd say.

Mark, The Katana is really all that fast. It's a REALLY detuned GSX-R motor. It's a sport touring bike and not a street bike.
I would never buy something like a Gixxer, CBR, R6, R1, etc are too much for a beginner.
My insurance on a 01 Katana 750 is only 4500 a year. Not bad imo.
