Advice for newest Civic owner... (90 Si)
What's going on?!
I'll play out a lil story... last night a buddy of mine and I went downtown Whitehorse at 2am to pick up the Black 90 Civic Si that I was buying off of him. His wife is HOT... but anyways... It doesn't start so we had to push the 2km to Honda at 3am. To my luck, an RCMP chick pulls us over but she had to respond to another call, so I got lucky.
Anyways, I have it at the shop right now getting the 50-point inspection done so I know what work needs to be done.
The car is almost fully stocked. There are minor mods, but nothing performance wise (to my knowledge anyways).
I want a quick little ride. What advice do you have for me, for things that I should do to my car.
Also if YOU have any pics of a later model Civic Hatch... post 'em up or email them to me at mholke@hotmail.com so I can be inspired for what I want.
Easy....

First of all Congrats for buying a civic, and as well I am especially found of the 88-91 models years. I myself actually drive a heavily modded 1991 hatch. Anyway as far as performance goes most people on here are gonna say intake/headers/exhaust, you wont really notice much difference from this except for alot of extra noise, my best reccomendation is to get it first properly tuned up with good quality oem or aftermarket parts then see how you like the stock power of the car. THe most power adding mods are gonne either be forced induction , "mini-me" v-tech head swap, or another motor altogether. The most cost effective power adding mod would likely be the mini-me vtech IMO. Personally like I said before see how you like the car the way it is to start then go from there, hell you might decide you are happy with the engine performance but not so happy with the braking performance, or the suspension performance and you might want to upgrade those areas first. If you need any more help or suggestions then pm me, I like to consider myself to be a 4th gen civic expert so I will try to help you to the best of my abilities.
Cheers

Let's be nice boys. Even the best of us screw up sometimes.
IMO, a swap is the best bang for your buck imo. Main stay is the B16A1 cause it's the easiest to swap. Si is already wired for VTEC though a wire or two might need to be added.
If it where my car I'd do this B18C1 w/ YS1 tranny, Integra Brakes, M/C and booster, suspension (full coil overs, new sway bars, tie bars, etc.), some 95 GS-R Hammerheads and then do body work.

Thanks guys...
As for what I want... I want a quick little car. I know I'm going to have to take some time to feel for the stock-iness of the car.
I'm not looking for complete performance in the car but Im also not looking for complete appearance either. I'm looking for a nice medium of both to compensate.
My buddy has a 92 Si and it is really quick. He is putting in a Turbo, but before he does I wanna put ours side by side, and have a lil race... He has cold air, VTEC Integra motor and some other mods.
Anyways, I have a minor plan of what I am interested in doing. First I was going to get a good deck, but it has it. So I want to now get a short-shifter and exhaust. I'm going to be putting in a cold-air intake in Sept or October. Other then that, I'm undecided really...

i'm just giving my input.. personally its a waste of money.. i wish i could have every cent i put into this car back.. now that i put so much money into it.. if i keep it i might as well make it mine ( few other goodies).. in the end means more money.... but i have some civic love left..

I would have to agree with blair and suggest that you tune all of the stock parts to original working order (or as close as possible).
Is it rusted badly?
Try to find all of the odd noises coming from it and get rid of them. Change your tranny fluid, coolant, brake fluid, rotors/pads, etc...Just give a good $500 tune up.
I hope you know how to work on cars or are willing to learn. Otherwise, this may be abit of a pain to own for the first little while.
Anyways, start with reviving the old thing and then take it from there. Just remember to buy QUALITY parts so you don't end up going back and replacing or upgrading them in the future.

Didn't 4th gen Si's have single cam VTEC engines though?
That and new cars suck. Plus there is no point in putting money into a car, you'll never get that money back. You do it because you enjoy it.

Here is how i worked my car...
Year One: (actually i had the car fro 3 years already)
-All new suspension bushings
-Disc brakes in the back
-coilovers
-strut bars
-New pads and rotors
Year Two:
-B16A1 engine swap
Year Three:
- Replace all rust with new metal
- New gas tanks and fuel lines
- Paint and body work
Future:
Try not to spend much more on the car, just enjoy driving what took three years to create. I may have a fair bit of cash into the car but i could not buy something else i would like as much for the amount fo money.
