99/00 Civic SiR -tips on buying one

Hello,

I'm looking to buy a 99/00 Civic SiR. I'm debating about going with a dealer or private. First Civic I checked out turned out to be an Si model theft recovery from the USA ($12,900)

The dealer (indepentant) told me first about the car. Theft recovery from the USA. Engine/transaxle replaced. 60K on the engine, and 50,000 miles on the OD. The guy was cool and didn't seem to be hiding any info.

In my travels of checking out Civic SiR's I would assume that some people won't state that the engine was replace. theft recovery, blah blah blah.

Is there a way to check to see if the engine came with that car? Is the VIN stamped some where on the engine?
What about accident and crap.. carfax??? Some MOT package?

Since I'm going to be dropping a lot of $$$ I don't want to get screwed over.

if original car, the Motor will have the VIN number, which should match the VIN on the windshield.

p.s maybe u know or dont know..

SI/SIR models are the same

SI - US
SIR CDN

I thought that Cdn SiR models had a couple more options than the american Si ie. heated mirrors I could be wrong.

I wasn't sure if the VIN were stamped on the B16A2.
Where about's is it stamped? head/block, front/back? I just don't want to be checking the car and taking forever to find a vin stamped on the enigne.

There where a few differences, like the heated mirrors.
The mechanics are the same.

Use carfax to check the VIN number.
VIN is stamped on the engine though I'm not sure where.

ok the VIN number is basically on the TAG...

if you look where the B16a2 is stammped...
it should be just below it to the left... with a TAG going vertical.

ummm no... pretty significant difference is that US Si does not have ABS whereas CDN SiR does.

anytime you find a US car in Canada, it was prolly an insurance writeoff at some point in it's life, unless it was brought in privately like I brought in my Saturn. But most US cars in canada are total losses that were brought here and fixed sometimes very very poorly. I'd stay far far away from cars like that. At that price point, I'd try to mind the mintest example of an SiR - not the cheapest. Be ready to pay a premium for numbers matching and original paint.

BBs right there, my car has an unknown record lol, it was in an accident in florida and rebuilt (wasn't too major to my knowledge) and then my cousin bought it and drove it up to Canada. And then I purchased it from him.

I'd say 12g's is far to cheap for an SIR... but man sounds like a sweet deal. Just remember some things are too good to be true

I would rather have an SiR over the Si model anyway's.

I just thought I would check out it since it was a bit cheap. As soon as the dealer told me it from the USA I basicly lost interest.
Then theft recovery I lost even more interest. The Ad on http://www.autotrader.ca stated it was an SiR with 50K.

I don't want to buy a SiR that's a theft recovery/write off.

I would assume not all sellers won't be 100% forthcoming with the info regarding the theft recovery/engine replaced, etc.

I'm also going to stay away from the cars that already have the I/H/E or cheese ball mods cause most of the time these cars were driven hard.

FLASHBBCRX watch out for some vin coming your way in the next couple of weeks. thanks

i just checked a red sir,yes the vin number is on a tag which is factory bolted to the tranny with no way of removing it unless someone uses a die grinder, the bolts have no heads they look like big rivots.
Brett.

yes they are rivots

what if they changed trannies, maybe the other tranny was shot , doesn't mean that its bad

i used to work at acura and when they do a warranty claim on a block /head or tranny , the new parts don't come with vins, but are stamped

If you are serious about an SiR, PM me. I am considering selling it. I bought mine practically new. I am a "mature" driver but I'll warn you, I won't sell it unless, I can get a good price for it.

It is a Canadian model, 2000. Practically stock except for the wheels and some badge removal. It's black with about 55,000 kms. The engine/transmission has never been replaced. I've been using Synthetic since it had 10,000 kms.

Others in the club have seen my ride.

I'll vote for mark here, it's a clean ride! Hell I'd buy it if I could get any cash for my car and had the extra... hehe
