100 noob questions...
Hey, I been tooling around the site for a few days now reading everyone's posts and checking out the cars and mods when I realized I have no idea what most of you guys are talking about, that and I haven't properly introduced myself - if that's required.
I am very new to imports, this is my first. In fact I haven't even taken delivery of the 04 SiR HB yet (now that is new) but have been modifying my cars since...well a long time anyway.
I am 32, live west of T.O. and work in IT. I have a few other cars currently under construction that fill most of my time.
My 72 Chevelle Malibu. My first car, purchased when I was 15-still have it - this is her current state.
My 2001 ZR2-My daily driver, a lot more mods done to it since this pic. 32" tires, 2" body lift, custom winch bumper, etc.
I sound like I'm trying to get a date...I'm not. I just thought this site and community was great and figured maybe some of you could help an old guy figure out wtf some of the stuff you guys are talking about means.
Like I said I am a total noob, so let's start with an easy first question : what makes the Si and the SiR and all the other models different? Are they refering to engine size or a body style or options or what?
I have about 99 more questions so bare with me as I learn about the Civics and modifying imports, there seems to be a lot of contradicting info. on the net. It's nice to have a single source for it all.
Thanks for the great site, I have learned alot, checked out a lot of really nice cars and look forward to reading and learning a lot more from the site as I modify my Civic...once I actually get it that is.
Thanks,
Gord

Welcome to the club......best bet is to do a search in the forums and you find tons of info there. As for the SI and SIR, it's both engine and bodystyle, depending on what generation you are talking about. I too are not as knowedgeable as some of the guru's in this site, and trust me, you are not that old until you get to mine and Marty's age.
I am sure there will be a few responses for you in this thread that can be more elaborate than I.
SI and SIR engines both have VTEC with the SIR putting out more HP than the SI. SIR also is a dual cam and SI is a single cam.

First off, welcome to the site.
To answer your first question:
Looking for the difference between the Si and SiR on the net will have you confused at first.
In Canada we have the Civic Si, and Civic SiR
In the US they have the Civic EX and Civic Si
So the US market EX= Cdn market Si and US market Si= Cdn market SiR and so forth.
I will refer to the Cdn market designations as htye are most common to you and I
The Cdn market Si comes in both sedan and coupe form and has a D series engine which is a SOHC 127hp 1.7L VTEC engine, stiffer springs and shocks, larger sway bars, wheels than a base model civic.
The 2004 SiR model is ONLY in hatchback form and houses a K series 2.0L DOHC 160HP VTEC engine. IT has 5 bolt wheels and tires and is of it's own unique body style. It is the most performance oriented Civic offered in the Cdn market.

Thanks guys, that clears up a bit. So the SiR and the Type R from England are basically the same car? I find tons of stuff on the Type R but not so much on the SiR, and the Type R doesn't seem to be only Civics. I won't confuse myself any further-thanks for the link and clearing that up for me. I have some more reading to do
I will most certainly be out to the Hamilton meets, young or old I like to check out cars...alot.
So my first upgrade will be alarm, and tint (wife dictated ) - from there I'll be converting over all the old vehicle's stereo stuff. Basic stuff, amps, sub, head unit, etc.
What is the next upgrade/mod I should be looking at? I was thinking about a carbon fibre hood or wings as it won't void any warranty and is still pretty subtle a change, especcially on a black car. It also looks really cool. What do you think? I know it's presonal preference but I wondered what you might do in my shoes. I don't want to get too "ricer" to quickly, this is a big change for me still. Baby steps lol
I will certainly be doing rims and tires in the summer but that will take a lot more shopping around, reading and checking out your guy's cars before I decide on that. I do have more questions about that stuff too but one at a time
Thanks again,
Gord

welcome to the club.
lets get the basics down
currently there are 7 different generations of the civic.
the majority of the people on this board have
4th gen
5th gen
6th gen
7th gen
the 4th gen is from 1988 to 1991 (it came is hatches and sedans)
the 5th gen is from 1992 to 1995 (hatch, coupe, sedan models)
the 6th gen is from 1996 to 2000 (hatch, coupe, sedan models)
the 7th gen is from 2001 to 2006 (hatch, coupe, sedan models)
now each generation has its OWN chassy code ie. EJ, ED,
for example the majority of the people on this board will call it by its JAPANESE chassy code
4th gen (EF)
5th gen (EG)
6th gen (EJ)
etc...
after the chassy lettering you will also get a single number like a 6 or a 9 that will identify if its a coupe, sedan or hatch.
to make things easier for now you should just learn about the usdm (United States Domestic Market) civics.
civics for every year UNTIL 1999 had all single over head cams with an option of v-tec on the si models and the 1992 honda civic sedan ex-i (i think that was the trim i forgot it). in 1999 we had an option of either getting a single over head cam motor or a dual over head cam motor which would be the SIR. this SIR was only available to the canadian market from 1999 to 2000. Even though the american market had the exact same car it was called the SI instead since our SI was their EX. The u.s. market however was lucky to get a special colour for their SI's (our sir's) that wasnt an option for us and that was a YELLOW paint.
what are the differences between our SI and SIR???
Dual over head Cams (DOHC V-tec)
Different Exhaust with a Chrome Tip
4 way Disc brakes with Rims rather then steelies
DOHC decal on both sides of the vehicle quaters
better Suspension
Amber Cluster with 9500rpm
Amber Climate Control
Amber Headunit
etc...

hellooooooo GORD! I'm Bruno
actually, sure, there are some younguns here, but most of us are in our mid 20s at least. then there is Si Veloz and HAPPY who are what... like 50 LOL haha
Nice 'bu you got there. I used to wrench on a 76 Monte Carlo and a ** Mustang when I was about 14. Neither car was mine tho, but that's how I got started. They belonged to my buddy who was clueless so I did all the work for him. One of our other buddies actually had a LeMans... ** I think, and that's the same body style as your 'bu if I remember right.
I think the rest of your questions have been covered.

Wow, thanks Rukus. That made more sense to me than all the reading I have done so far. You need to post that some where as a sticky for other noobs it really cleared up alot. Maybe add pics of the body style changes adn stuff. Thanks.
Why did I make the switch to an import? Well I haven't completely made the switch. I do still own the 2 Chevys. The wife was looking for a car (actually a truck) and after having a look at the usual places (domestic lots-I am a Chevy guy only so it didn't take very long) I came to realize that Chevy didn't have anything to offer us at all aside from a Vette or a SS/R. Minus 80 grand and me don't mix so well.
You look at small cars (Cav, sunfire) and they are hideous IMO, then you can go up to what? Alero or Grand AM, also fugly, or step up further to GTP or Monte, while much nicer - still not worth the money, then you can jump to like Caddies or Olds, no thanks.
Trucks are so outragously priced for new and the pickins are so slim for used now you can't get any decent 4x4 for under 20 grand and those have 100,000k on them.
After that option was eliminated, my choice was clear. I hit Halton Honda and there she sat like it was meant to be (I considered the RSX as well but the wife prefered the HB).
Neither of us had driven a Honda before and I was so surprised and excited and, hell it was just plain fun to drive and even to ride in that it was only a matter of hashing out the details for me.
The wife sat on the fence for a while until she started asking around and everyone she asked just loves there Civics. I am even impressed with the dealership.
Like I said in another post, these cars are the muscle cars of today, if it were 1969 it'd be a Camaro Z28 but it's not, so a Civic it is.
Thanks for the warm welcome guys, and JookSingKid I'm gonna need to see your ride before I decide about that date lol

your choice in cars was a good one.
lots of mods....
this is your first honda so let me tell you this people who have been in the scene for a long time opted for the RSX over the SIR because of the price and features. it was almost the same price for a better equipped and better handling car.
thanks alot for the props on the writeup.
if at any time u need any help with your car or need to know more stuff about your car or any other honda for that matter feel free to either ask me via posts or pm me i will help you out.
when i got into the game there wasnt alot of info on these cars and i had to pretty much gather everything from scratch or from 20 other people. now that i have the knowledge and understanding of these cars i feel that i can contribute to noobie's and people who ask and want to know about these cars from a single source.
