'08 VW City Golf
so lately i saw quite a lot of those cars driving around, and decided to check them out on the vw site. amazing low price with the options you get IMO. so i went today to the dealership to get quote. and basic model, 5spd, with comfort package and cd/mp3 player with 8 speakers came out to $265/month with tax and everything included, for 48 months (this is lease)
comes with 4 year warranty bumper to bumper and 5 years on powertrain
over all the design is not bad, i wouldnt say the nicest.. but definitely neat. the interior seemed carefully made, no feeling cheapness if you know what i mean. for that small car trunk seems pretty spacecious, with folding down seats too.
so i booked a test drive tomorrow at 1 pm to test drive the 5spd. i'll let you know tomorrow how it handles.
anyone have any expericiences with VW? any opinions or suggestions somebody would like to share? or overall thoughts about the new city golf?

Its' a solid car, but i wish they made it in diesel like in Europe, I would also check out the rabbit; its more expensive but imo worth the extra cash if you got it. But still i'd opt out for the new civic( again i wish they had the European hb here)

If you plan on keeping it for more then a few years, you'll need that warranty. I had several VW's in the past before my Civic's and in my experiences, they were very unreliable. Parts were very expensive too.
The City Golf is nothing more then a slightly redesigned Golf and they had known engine problems. For the money, a new Civic can easily be purchased instead.

i had a vw and it was nothing but pure problems. Mostly electrical problems everywhere, very unreliable car and pretty slow too.
i would not buy a vw again , had my jetta for 3 years and it was just a nightmare driving it and even worst when it came to fixing it because the parts are ridiculous expensive for such a shi t t y car

In June last year, when I was looking to buy a new car, I looked at the City Golf too. Even though the starting price is very low, what made me decide not to get one was the end was the fact that by the time I was adding all the options I wanted, the car came out to be as much, if not more than the Civic EX.
Then I heard about all the reliability problems, and I decided to stay with Honda and get my 2nd Civic rather than a VW.

wow, not exactly what i expected to hear about the german company. i guess jap cars pull it off again, lol. i'm still going for that test drive today, i can at least compare it to my previous mazda protege 5 i had.

so i just came back, test drove both auto and manual.
to start with, i did like the fact how easy it was to arange yourself in front of the wheel. but skipping to the driving part. if i'm not wrong, my civic produces 115hp, same as the vw, and even though the vw has a 2.0 L, my civic still felt a bit happier to rev up.
the steering was a bit tight, the gas pedal has a little lag to it. overall the 5spd seemed more responsive, although the auto had a 6 gear tiptronic, but i didnt have the same feeling shifting with the tiptronic like i did with my mazda.
if i were to pick either one, i'd go with 5spd, but overall i'd rather stick to honda or mazda.

got this from APA about the city golf...
Previous versions of this model were rated poor, but as of 2004 and 2005, VW seems to have sorted out the faults owners complained about most. Rear brake wear and faulty rear suspension bushings could be the biggest problems owners face. Clean rust off the brake pads and lubricate the calliper guide pins semi-annually, and check parking brake for seized cables to avoid expensive repairs. You will have to request this brake maintenance specifically, as many VW dealers overlook it.
