Transmission shop suggestion?

My 91 Civic Si has some loud transmission noise when clutch is engaged, especially 1st and 2nd gear under 3000 rpm. Sounds like a loud whirring. I want to get as close to a new transmission as possible. Rebuild or replace? If so, which shop. Cost is secondary to premium work.

Hold on, are you sure you are using the term "engaged" properly? Engaged clutch is when the pedal is up. If that is right, your transmission makes noise as you accelerate? Most likely its input shaft bearing. But that would be true in all gears.

Explain in more detail. Does it go away ever?

It does happen in all gears, but it seems more noticeable in 1st and 2nd. I'm thinking all parts of the transmission are going - synchros, input shaft bearing. 290k and it's been driven hard.

Well if it shifts normally then its not synchros.

Imho rebuilding a honda transmission is pointless unless you do it yourself. Price of labour is just not worth it. Get another transmission from importers and call it a day.

It's most likely a differential problem.

I am paired up with an excellent transmission shop. If you want to bring it to Hivelocity, we can definitely take care of you.

Price of labour isn't that bad. It's the parts that cost big bucks.

I recommend chris_v2. Great work and fair prices. You can also check out Foreign Speed as another option for shops to check out.
