rebuild b16 trans or buy used type r

hey guys, i got my B16 tranny ripped apart at the trans shop to check the diff and do maintance and basically the diff is still new from havin an upgrade to LSD, the synchros are good but i should do the bairings. Its going to cost me $700 for parts and labour to do the work and the tranny will be like new.

Here's my question, should I spend the cash and get a rebuilt like new tranny with short gears and 4.4 final drive, or go buy a used type r with stronger dual synchro gears and hopefully a 4.7 final drive (if i can somehow find a 98+ jdm one around that price) i know there's type r's for that price on kijiji but i dought their 4.7 fd's. And being used and sitting on garage floors who says they dont need work themselves right?

What do you guys think is 4.7 final drive alot different than 4.4 final drive? and should i go "like new" b16 trans or used and prolly beat to hell type r that chances are its the more common 4.4 final drive?

I wouldn't bother with a rebuilt transmission. Look into a re-manufactured transmission instead. Rebuilt transmission usually only include new friction material and seals and gaskets. A re-manufactured transmission is so much more. It's basically like a news transmission at a much, much lower price. All hard parts are re-machined of replaced to duplicated OEM specs. They also include upgrades and modifications that the transmission should have come with in the first place. Just my two cents from 25 plus years in the transmission business.

Thanks for the info but its already done, I got another shop in Toronto to do the bad bearing, change my third gear and put a 4.9 final drive gear in it for $850, parts included in that price.

That seems like a pretty good price! Good luck with your transmission and hope you have no further issues.
