Angry Am I being ripped off?

Hey there, long time lurker and occasional poster. Anyways, I have a family 'friend' who is ready to install a new transmission that i need in my 2000 civic si (d16y8). He is charging $300 for the tranny and $500 for labor. So $900 total not even mentioning a new clutch. So...opinions? I really don't like this guy and feel like he's trying to hustle me. I asked him to make sure the code stamped on the new transmission was correct (B000) for an si and he freaked out. 500 for labor seems ridiculous... and so does 300 for a tranny. Id really like to tell this guy to go **** himself, but if these are honest prices than I'm fine with it.

thats straight up a rip-off.

A d16y7 tranny is $100 and it should be no more than $300-400 labour TOPS!!!

I'd expect around a $700-$800 repair bill with a used d series tranny and a decent OE replacement clutch with labour. So yeah, rip off.

As Chris and Andrew said, he's trying to rip you off. Tell him to screw himself and be more honest with people.
I've sold a perfectly good Si transmission for $50 dollars before. Labour would be around $300, fluid $40. Do a new clutch release bearing while it's off and you're good to go.

He's been talked down to $300 for labour and $350 for the trans. Not bad, but since I hate this guy i'm saying it should be 250 for the trans or forget it.

I think this job should cost you no more than $500 to be honest. That's with transmission, labour, fluid, clutch release bearing, and axle seals if you want to change them.
I always laugh at the 'family friend' guy. These are typically the people who try to rip you off the most.

Make sure you get the matching transmission, and not the one off the D16Y7!

Why don't you just do one of two options

Bring it into Andrew/Chris' shop

or

Pick up a hans manual and do it yourself. There are SO MANY threads on installing trannys on a D-Series engine. Try d-series.org

It must be Transmission guys. The guy at Marks Trans in chatham thinks he should get paid 3x what a normal price is too. Best yet do it with a straight face.
