97 Honda civic tranny input bearing replacement?

I just took my car into the shop to have it diagnosed for transmission noise and they said it was the input bearing.
Has anyone attempted to replace this by themselves? I am very mechanically inclined and would attempt it but I dont want to be wasting my time. I was told you need special tools to remove and install the bearing.

If anyone can help me out with information about replacing this, that would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance.

You need a slide hammer for the bearing.

Just because you are mechanically inclined, doesn't mean you can overhaul a transmission.

However, there are many DIY's out there for this. Google it.

How many actual bearings are there in the transmission that can be replaced?

depends on the tranny. you might not need a slide hammer to get the bearign out sometime you do though. you also want to have a bearing drive to properly install the new one. your gonna need to right "C" clip pliers to get the tranny open and closed properly and there are a few things you need to know how to line up when putting a tranny back toghether or you'll never get it back in one piece. if you've had training on manual tranies then it's not so hard but without I'd say 9/10 on the difficulty scale for a DIY project. only becuase mistakes can be costly on both time and money. there's a lot of expensive parts that you can brake easily with a tranny including the housing. I've seen and heard of people craking it trying to get it back together. if your gonna do it look up specs and proceedures and take your time and do it right the first time.

As for removing the bearing from the housing I've stuffed a bunch of grease packed in behind the bearing and then used a large punch through the middle and that forces the bearing up. harder and more work then if you have a slide hammer for this app but work when in a bind.

Thanks for the replies guys. ive found some DIYs on the web and it looks pretty straightforward to me.

Just to ask again thought, besides the input bearing, what other bearings inside can be replaced?

The "input" bearing is actually called the pilot bearing. If you're pulling the trans just to replace the pilot bearing, take a close look at the through-out bearing also...replace it if it has even the slightest bit of play and/or noise....cheap and easy anti-whine/hum insurance.

^^ no its not. The pilot bearing can be replaced by just removing the flywheel where as the input shaft bearing is inside the transmission.
If you remove the transmission/clutch you will see the pilot bearing and can touch it through the whole in the flywheel where the input shaft goes in. I see why/how you could think that pilot bearing is the same.

Now for OP there are many bearings inside the transmission. If you download a service manual, you can see the transmission broken down with all the little pieces.
If you are doing this on a D series transmission, just save yourself a headache and grab another transmission for 200$

What I am talking about is the Input Shaft bearing. I have just replaced the release and pilot bearing, along with the clutch assembly.

well, you have differential bearings (expensive little ******) and main and counter shaft bearings, along with the input shaft bearing.

Check out one of the online parts places, they usually have the nice breakdown of the parts and what they're called.

I just sold my stock mint running D16y7 WITH a mint 5-speed trans for $120...search the classifieds dude...d-series **** sells cheap and you'd prolly be better off buying another trans than spending that much on replacing the internal bearings on your trans...that isn't cheap to get done at a shop.

^^ dont trust forums all that much. i bought a d-series off this forum [dont remember the user] it would grind into 2nd/4th all the time. also he was saying that it is supposed to be off an Si but it wasn't [silly me didn't look at the code]. In the end due to other reasons i had to get another transmission, i got it from TigerJapanese. they wanted 250$ i talked them down to 200$ cash and i went into the shop and found the one i liked. Had no grinds/no problems. just get yourself yellow pages and look under Japanese parts importers or such. I remember going to 4 different stores and they all wanted 240-250$ cash no tax [meaning no warranty].
Be AWARE that most shops do not know the difference in the codes and what car they came off. here is a usefull link: Link
If they let you walk around in the shop, look through the transmission where the shafts go, if you cannot see through it, that means its an LSD transmission. again the shop will most likely not look at those things and if you just ask they will toss any transmission at you and say "OH Ya its fo civik" so just be aware of what you are buying.

EDIT: trust only good people on forums. lol
