the charge is the same as driving w/o licence plates
$500 i think..... plus they can give you little tickets like
:failing to show proof of registeration
:failing to show valid plate on car
:driving an unregistered car
etc, etc, etc........MTO only gives ONE temp plate... after that, you gotta tow to car around

imported_dmacbo 12-Mar-2003 07:14 PM

Temp plates are only to be used to get a car cerified and ready for the road.....they are not to be used for driving around to get groceries.....pick up a video at Blockbusters....ect.

One day to go there, and to come back. You're not suppose to use them in any other way.

They give you the extra days, so you can pick ONE day that is convenient for you the do the safety/certification on.

That's my understanding.

temp plates are for 10 days then yes you CAN get another

Legacy73 13-Mar-2003 10:13 AM

I just came from the MTO and got a 10 day. She told me you can only get 1 trip permit while the car is registered in the other person's name. When the car is certified and transfered into your name you can get as many as you like.

PULOVR 13-Mar-2003 02:42 PM

Well then....what th use of getting insurance? How much is the permit again?

Price of permit x 3 (covers the whole month).....I bet that it would be waaaaaaay below what I pay for insurance per month.

Yeah, I know ......there are thing put into place to keep people from abusing this.

Legacy73 13-Mar-2003 05:32 PM

My insurance told me that you need to get car specific insurance even with a 10 day. I have insurance on my new vehicle even with a 10 day permit, I guess I'm just being safe.

Yes you need insurance to even get the temp plate legally. I just made up a false policy number to get mine while I was shopping for insurance.

I got pulled over a month ago or so for driving with a template that was 2 months expired. All I got was a $110 ticket and the cop told me to tow it home but that he had to write up reports so he was gonna turn a blind eye. I got pulled over for speeding origianally. In total I got $410 in tickets (3 tickets) and 3 points. Going for a meeting with the crown in August. My car could have had plates if the ******* morons at the MTO would get their **** straight. Long and frustrating story. When I got pulled over, it was on the way to get an E-test, which I never even needed.

Ah well. I'm selling my car anyways now. It was somewhat fun while it lasted.

BTW: You can get as many trip permits as you like as long your car is classified as a FIT vehicle. Basically as long as you transfer the ownership and pay the taxes.
