Turbo and Insurance Question

Ok. This is question for anyone who either has a boosted Civic, or knows how boosting a car would affect their rates.

I have seriously been looking at boosting my car, but before I go ahead and do that I want to know how this might affect my insurance.

I know that with most modifications, especially perfomance ones, you should report them to your inusrer. It's part of the contract. From what I've heard, the rate is affected by the extent of the mod.

But is there anyone here that has actually boosted their car and had it affect their rate? I'm sure that there's people who have boosted and not told their insurer. Unfortunately, if you ever need any of the accident benefits like income replacement, you could get denied if they learn you modded your car without letting them know. Your contract is pretty much void.

So... Has anyone told their insurer that they've boosted, or does anyone know how it would affect their rate?

Thanks.

I would imagine that your insurance company would cancel your policy or jack up your rates. You could ask them.

I think most will cancel your policy. I've been looking for some time for a insurance company that will cover an engine swap. No such luck. I keep getting the same response, "we can't insure you cause your modifying the car for street racing". Total BS. Only in Ontario, you got to love it.

A few people on here say you can get coverage, but I'm yet to find someone.

I had a friend with a boosted Del Sol and his insurance didn't know. Well someone hit him and the car was a write off. When the insurance company found out about the turbo they didn't want to pay out on the claim. After a few months fighting with them he finally got his money.

My previous car was turbo'd for 2 years, I didn't disclose that to my insurance company. Got into a minor fender bender, the adjuster came to look at my car, saw the gauges, intercooler, exhaust. Next day I rec'd a call from the estimator asking about my mods.

I told them my car was turbocharged, and they gave me 10 working days to put my car back to factory spec, otherwise my insurance policy would be cancelled.

My rates did not go up, and they paid for the accident.

Luckily it was a minor fender bender, otherwise I would have been f.ucked.

Lesson to be learned, disclose all info to your insurance company.

you can take your insurnace company to court if they refuse to pay out for the accident. Ofcourse the accident can't have anything to do with the modification.

EX: you were racing and hit a pole. They'll have an easier time winning in court. Its harder to convince a judge that your engine swap made the car unsafe, or resulted in someone rear ending you.

ofcourse this is just in general. Some insurnance companies will fight you tooth and nail, others will eventually pay out as they don't want the headache.

Its hit or miss.

I understand the OP is WILLING TO PAY FOR THE MOD. I don't think that's the point. The insurance company is under the impression that your car is what you say it is. So if you verify that you are driving a stock 2000 SI, then that's what they think you are driving. You could have your car parked at the side of the road and get smoked by someone. If this is the case and they send someone to investigate, you are screwed. The car is no longer what they agreed to insure. You are paying your premiums based on the fact that you are in the stock 2000 SI, anything else and you have modified your contract - thus, making it void.

They have every right to fight you tooth and nail. You breached the contract by being dishonest. I would be up front and disclose the details. Imagine your in your ride with your family, wife, the milk mans daughter etc. A freak accident occurs and you or/and your passenger is severely hurt.. Is the insurance company obligated to cover you? No. Will they? Never say never, but I am willing to bet they will fight it to the bone. They most likely have more money then you & a team of lawyers. Can't find a company to cover a turbo mod? Don't do it. Is it worth it? You hitting the track? Is it your daily driver? Plan on doing some speeding? Heading to Germany?

You aren't there to convince a judge that you are justified in your mod. If you are, you already lost. If you approach with that attitude, they already won.

Why can't you use normal sized font?

What are you talking about "the OP is willing to pay for the mod?"
I didn't say they don't have the right to fight you... obviously they do.

Im saying plenty of people have mods on their cars that aren't reported to insurnace yet, they are covered even if they get into accidents. Sure your contact is void.. and insurnance will tell you that. That doesn't mean you roll over and die.

Perhaps you should re-read my ENTIRE post

What defines a mod?
does changing the rims on your car make it a mod? will they not cover you cause u have rims on your car?

You can QQ all you want about the font, this one will be pink just for you. I'm not going to re-read your post, you had nothing constructive to add to the discussion at hand.

There is a good chance there will not be a negative consequence to throwing a set of rims on your car. That was perhaps the worst possible example you could have given, as that is comparing apples to oranges. Rims & turbo are obviously 2 different aspects of modding. Will your rims allow you to boost? Cmon, get real.

What part of "if the OP is willing to pay for the mod" did you not understand? I was refering to the OP accepting the insurance raise due to his mod *turbo*

Please, at least work on your spelling + sentence structure before bringing some noise. It felt like I was proof reading a little kids work. :frusty:

wow.. you are an idiot...

so tell me... you're stopped at a stop light and someone rams you from behind.. I guess your turbo caused the accident.

I asked you what defines a mod?.. why don't you answer that tool?
"theres a good chance," what type of statement is that?
"Comparing apples to oranges" Whats a mod then... thats my point.. i guess you're too slow to understand that
are sticky tires considered a mod?
are lower springs considered a mod?
is an intake considered a mod?
you have all the answers, why don't you tell us?

let me guess.. they're different aspects of modding right...

have you ever had your car modded and had your insurnace company deny a claim?

My car was modded when I had a claim with my company, they faught with me for a while, then they paid. Not for the mod, but for my car and the damages.

Someone hasn't learned how to relate with others. If this was a battle of wits, you already lost. Just because something sounds right in your head before you share it with others, doesn't mean that it is. Regardless of what your kindergarten teach has taught you. You can't have a discussion without calling someone an idiot or a tool? You will go far, I can see it now. Anyhow, your turning this into something that it isn't. I don't have the time to argue with you. Your going in circles and your reading comp is below par.

Oh, thought I would go pink again for you :clap2:

I think (and would hope to believe) that as long as you are not the one at fault, you should be covered. Now if you didn't disclose about, say, expensive wheels, then I think it is logical for the insurance company not to cover it.

Stock car is worth $5,000 if written off, and you have $5,000 dollars worth of modifications added but not disclosed, you only get $5,000 dollars back - that makes perfect sense to me. If you drive the car normally on the road, obey signs and drive within reasonable speed (10 over I honestly don't think is that big of a deal, granted, it is still considered speeding), a 600hp car is no different than a Pinto. Cars don't move on their own, us drivers make them behave and operate the way we want them to.

My only advise is regardless what mod you have or what you are about to add to your car, drive cautiously and make sure you obey the basic traffic laws to reduce your chance of getting pulled over, such as catalytic convertor, licence plates, cars not too low, no excessive loud muffler…etc
