Trip Permit

im going with a friend next sunday to pick up a car that he bought in Ajax.(its a 4th gen)
he doesnt have a drivers license yet.
he bought the car coz he got a good deal on it.
now, im prolly driving it back to their house, does he need to get a trip permit just to get that car home?
if i drive the car w/out trip permit and we get pulled over, what are the consequences?
any other options?
TIA :smoker:

What you need to do is get the new ownership and fill out seller/buyer info on the back. Make sure the ownership says fit and not unfit, if it says unfit you will be stuck towing.

Take the ownership to the MTO and get a 10 day permit which is $15. You need to call his insurance company and have insurance put on the vehicle.

If you do not do this then you could get nailed for no insurance, plates, stickers. Could be over $5000 in fines and it is possible I know somone that had to pay $5500 in fines cause of no insurance when driving a car home unplated.

the car hasnt been driven for a long time and has no insurance at the moment.
does my friend really have to get both the insurance and the trip permit?
thanks.

he might be able to get one trip permit but I'm not sure on this without insurance..... but hey best way to find out is to walk into the car permit government place thingy and ask them... they are very very nice and helpful people and have been a great help to me (like when the VIN on my ownership was wrong hehehe)

I know forsure that you need valid insurance under your friends name for that car. You have to fill out the policy number on the trip permit form.

This is the only legal way to move that vehicle without towing, I had to go through all this with the car I just purchased.

You could always risk driving it home but if you get in an accident or get pulled over your screwed.

well if you've been through it then ... you have more knowledge then I do on that ...so I'll concede victory too you .... you win...

legacy73, you must have the 10 day temporary trip permit, and u must have insurance, even if your friend is not driving, you need insurance, cops will pull you over if they don't that temporary plate, i got pulled over even though i had it and he said he couldn't see it, brought it to court and they dropped the charges. but u dun want to risk it, what happens if you hit someone? you'll be nailed hard, what happens if someone hits you? you get nailed hard too, b-cuz 1 the guy doesn't have to pay for it, cuz u weren't insured. balh blah. but yeah, cops will nail you hard for not having insurance and that permit.

Ministry won't issue trip permit's without proof of ins.

nautica_t I'm not the one that is getting a trip permit, I went through this process last month and was helping eric with his question. I am fully aware that no insurance meanes paying out your ass for the rest of your life if you hurt or kill someone.

In order to get a trip permit you can just put down any policy number on the form, this has been my experience.

Just had to get a trip permit, because my sticker expired while I was away and to get the new sticker I had to go for emmisions. They ask for the insurance slip, if you don't provide it they don't give it to you. Unless you get a dummy behind the counter that doesn't care.

good info guys .

ill tell my friend what options hes got.

thanks.

yeah everytime i went, they always asked to see that insurance slip, whether it was faxed or not, they needed to see it at least. i've done this twice, and to obtain a trip permit you need to have the car titled as a FIT vehicle....

I guess I got a dummy more then once since I had 3 trip permits and not once did they ask for proof of insurance.
