is an SIR an insurance deathtrap?

Its definitely gonna be expensive to insure, especially if you are going as the primary driver. Of course it all depends on record, area, history with the company. Some companies will not insure modified cars, I think State Farm is one of them but not 100% sure. It wouldn't be smart to buy the car at your age without calling the company first to see how much they want for insurance.

even if you get the insurance at a reasonable rate....the risk of it getting stolen will still be high. make a decision that is financially viable for you and dont end up paying a pretty penny for it.

The SIR is one of the most stolen cars around its like a theif magnet, thats the real reason for the high insurance rates.
if you can, i wud seriously suggest going for your G as soon as possible, that helps with insurance costs.
and maybe get a lower model civic and do a sway if you want to save some insurance costs, at least thats what i would do.

My friend was paying about $8000 a year to insure a 2000 SiR primary driver with a clean record from 17 years old to 20 years old, at which point it was stolen.
I'm paying about $2600 a year secondary on a 2000 Si with a clean record.

I'm 22 with my G2. I was planning on getting a 1999 or 2000 SiR and State Farm told me my insurance would be about $180 a month. This is with me as a secondary driver and registered and insured through my mom.
Cheaper this way, and the way I plan to go.

Coming from a RIBO certified insurance broker which SPECIALIZES in modified and customized import vehicles and bikes (me), I'd either insure an SiR properly, or let the insurance company know about any modified parts on my vehicle should i decide to "turn" a car into an SiR.
If you do decied to swap without telling insurance you could:
A: NOT be covered for the motor, and/or
B: there is a a very good chance you will not be covered for anything at all, including a liability claim if you injure someone or get injured yourself, which could reach over 1,000,000.
Just to let you know...

Then you get in an accident, insurance will see the B18 under the hood and deny your claim. You'll lose both ways.

Or if your insurance company does allow modified cars, get SiR doors on the DX.
