Primary/Secondary Drivers

Has anyone ever had insurance that said they were the secondary driver when they actually were the primary driver?
I can save a whole lot of money saying that my dad is the primary driver when he isn't (because he doesn't drive at all but lives in the same house), good or bad idea?

I use to do that, still know lots of people who do it. Technically its not legal, but can save you lots of money.

My advice to you, if you do decide to go ahead with it, dont make noticable mods to your car, you dont need the added attention.

If you get too many tickets driving the same car all the time, people (insurance) start to ask questions.

Finally, your dad needs to have a valid license in order to do this. Which is only stating the obvious.

I did it for 3 years and saved enough money to buy a new car and pay for primary driver.

personally i don't think it matters.

save now, pay more later, or pay more now and save later.

in the end, they'll ding you later when you buy your own car and get insurance and become primary priciple driver.

Not necessarily. For instance, if you are under the age of 25 your considered high risk. So if you were to go under your dad as a secondary driver until you reach that age group then your premium will significantly decline, assuming you don't make any claims. Now once you become a primary driver at the age of 25 you would be paying just a bit more then what you would be as a secondary when your under 25. I don't see how paying now as a primary will save you later. Right now I am under my dad as a secondary. Since he has made a few claims within the last few years it was best for me to pair up with him as we were both considered a higher risk and therefore me being under him didn't increase his premium as much as it would under my mom's who has a 5-star rating.

Hmm. I'm thinking I might just be primary to save from a potential hassle, but thanks for all the input.
