Out of province insurance

What are the laws regarding getting insurance from companies or brokers outside of Ontario, from places such other provinces or even the US?

And driving the car in Ontario hoping to get a cheaper rate from another Province? That would be insurance fraud wouldn't it?

Maybe im not being fully understood. I was speaking with a local guy who road races a CRX thats basically a track car ie cage, stripped etc. He told me that his insurance and broker was located in Nova Scotia but they have an office in Ontario. I am asking is it legal in Ontario to purchase insurance from another province, whereby the company knows you are from for example Toronto. I am not asking if I register my car in another province, getting insurance from there and pretending to be living there.

I see. I suppose the company and broker could be located anywhere really, as long as they knew where you were. Now that I think about it, I think my insurance company is located in NS.

An insurance company must register their rates for approval with Ontario's government regulators before they can begin selling auto insurance policies in Ontario. As long as the insurance company in question does that, it makes no difference where their head office is.

You're not likely to see cheaper rates though. An insurance company will still price their policies according to the actuarial risks and benefits required by Ontario law.
