what about the new speeding laws? you gonna say that you didn't know cause it's a fairly new law?

bottom line, ignorance doesn't cut it in the court of law

Just because you and all your friends do it and don't get in trouble doesn't mean it's not illegal. Do i get trouble from cops for j-walking? no. is it illegal? yes.

how can anyone compared the license plate covers to speeding laws?? Aside from you seing the big warnings on the highway everytime you go on it as well as being advertise in many places , this is a common sense law people!!!...that's why there is signs with speed limits everywhere you go!!

So if tomorrow they say that cars can not have performance tires , rims that are bigger than the stock ones , euro rear lights , stickers , everyone is supposed to know this?? .....

There is a hugeee difference between comparing common sense law than to compare stupid laws like the cover plate one or the ones i put as an example.

it is , but is a common sense law... its not like before you could go 50 k over and nothing was going to happen .

Also this law its being advertise on many places. If you go on the highway to can always see the warnings about the 50 k and over speed limit.

The same applies for the seat belt that has to be wear by the passengers in the back.

We are talking about cosmetics in your car.

anyways i just spoke to a buddy from my soccer team who is a cop.

They are illegal (which i found out earlier here) , however it is almost impossible to get pull over because of them and even more is to get a ticket for having them on.

A cop can technically do it but they do not bother , unless they really want to pull you over and they need to have a reason to do it (speeding, racing type car, lowered car, suspicious look , etc). Or id they pulled you over for a different reason and your attitude ask for more tickets

He has only seen not more than 3 people getting a ticket for license plate covers but those tickets were given after the person was ticketed for different infraction (beating a red light , etc) , or punks giving attitude to the police officer (big no no!).

we also had a good laughed when I compared the license plate tickets to the 50k over limit ticket or you in possession of a knife.

He also said you can fight the ticket at court and they will most likely dropped it or at least reduce it , it all depends how you present your case because it is not a major infraction and it is not like you put someones life in danger (beating red light , speeding )

this is what i found on the highway traffic act

Number plate to be kept clean
(2) Every number plate shall be kept free from dirt and obstruction and shall be affixed so that the entire number plate, including the numbers, is plainly visible at all times, and the view of the number plate shall not be obscured or obstructed by spare tires, bumper bars, any part of the vehicle, any attachments to the vehicle or the load carried. 1994, c. 27, s. 138 (7).
Obstruction prohibited
(3) The number plates shall not be obstructed by any device that prevents the entire number plates including the numbers from being accurately photographed using a photo-radar system. 1993, c. 31, s. 2 (5).
Same
(3.0.1) The number plates shall not be obstructed by any device that prevents the entire number plates including the numbers from being accurately photographed using a red light camera system. 1998, c. 38, s. 2 (1).
Same
(3.1) The number plates shall not be obstructed by any device or material that prevents the entire number plates including the numbers from being identified by an electronic toll system. 1996, c. 1, Sched. E, s. 2 (1).

ummm it is still not very clear to me that they forbid all plate covers as long as the plate number can be visible to the police and cameras. although the whole act is huge , maybe someone can find where it clearly states "not plate covers at all"

I once got pulled over for the whole license plate thing. Not for the cover (didnt have one), but for my cr being extremely dirty. Kinda embarassing because he chuckled while he warned me.

Driving is a privilege NOT a right. it doesnt matter if its as small as having plate covers or as big as modifying cars YOU NEED TO LEARN THE DAMN LAW AND OBEY IT. OR Pay the damn fines when you do eventually get a ticket.

i dont have to argue with a cop ... i ll take it to court simple as that.
Plus i being pulled over by cops 3 times last year , they never even mentioned the plate covers . I had cops behind my car so many times ( i live close by a police station) never had a problem.
furthermore i learned that when i cop pulls you over it all depends on the attitude you showed him for him to give you a warning or a ticket. And also how you present your case, i wouldn't tell a cop to read the hta because he ll give me a ticket.

Plus people you gotta understand having a plate cover its not like you went past the speed limit or beat a red light (some people even compared to the 50k + limit), it is a simple offense and most cops would not stop you or even give you a ticket for it. There is always the odd case when that happens but you can surely take it to court !, come on if you can take a speeding ticket to court , why not a stupid cover plate ticket.!

A lot of stuff is being said in this thread and all points are being misunderstood.

Nobody said that having a knife or doing over 50 is the same as the license plate cover. All they are saying is, you know those to be illegal, yet no one knows about the plate cover.

Bottom line, the plate cover is illegal and your best bet is to take it to court. If you win, bonus, if not, pay the fine and now everyone knows the law
