License plate confiscated!
 

Hi people, so thiis is my story. I was driving a car which my mom left behind when she moved back to Hong Kong 3 years ago. But the car is still under her name. I stopped paying insurance since then.

Last month I was caught driving in a bus lane, and the officer found out I didn't buy insurance and took my plates away and told me I would have to ask my mom to go to the police station in order to get them back. But my lawyer adviced me not to because he said the officer is prolly planning to give my mom a $5000 ticket for letting me drive the car without insurance. He showed mercy, the ticket that I got from him was only "failing to SHOW insurance".

Is there any ways I can re-certify a new license plates from the MTO? Or get the plates back without being ticketed?(Like changing ownership from my mom to myself and I will try to get them back since I'm then the owner of the car)

You are pretty much screw man , and you will most likely get a ticket for not having insurance and driving a car with an expired plate... I think the ticket is actually 2500 for the first time ... If the car is not worth 2500 i would say just forget about it !! ....

First off, Just pay the failure to show insurance ticket. There is no way around that, and you shouldn't be driving without it anyways.

Second, change the ownership into your name. Unless you show proof of insurance, safety cert. and e-test, they will only allow you to transfer the vehicle as "un-fit", which means you can't get plates and can't drive the car on the road. When you tranfer the ownership and they ask for a bill of sale or what you paid for the car, just explain the situation as it is and maybe get your mom to send a writen letter signed by her, with the same explanation.

To get the vehicle on the road, after you transfer the ownership as unfit, phone around and get insurance. Once you have insurance, go to the MTO with proof of insurance and ask for a 10-day permit (you must do this within 30 days of transferring the ownership, so get insurance as soon as you transfer the ownership). This will allow you to drive the car on the road so you can get the car certified and e-tested. Take the safety and e-test back to the MTO and get plates and licence plate sticker.

No. When a car is sold the license plate stays with the owner. The buyer has to put his or her own license plates on the car.
