Insane insurance

Ok so I call these people up today and asked them what they were quoting me. The lady says "Sky High". So I'm getting pissed off and say "can you please elaborate on sky high". She says "$1800". So I'm like that's a great price, but then something told me to ask if that was the monthly payment or yearly payment. She says "monthly". At this point I'm furious. She said the reason why it was that high was because I got into an accident last year which was 50/50 and because of the car I'm driving factored in with age. I understand that I'm 19 years old, and 2002 Honda Civic Coupe is kind of sporty, but $1800 is beyond ridiculous. She said another way of doing this is switching my mom's name over to the car and switch mine to her minivan and my mom would be paying $400. I used to pay $250 as a secondary driver on my old car with full coverage.

I m guessing you called state farm .. I got something like 12 500 full coverage for one year , same age and 1 accident... That was their way of telling me , we dont want you here :D

I would try calling bel air, td , economical , as they tend to be more forgiving...

Put the car in your grandma's name. You don't need to be a secondary driver, because the address would be different, and the car needs to be insured, not the driver. I paid $400 a year. I thought my $575 a month was bad... Dude... that's turrable!

1800 a month? HOLY CRAP!

Insurance companies just love those civics ;)

About time to switch to something more powerful/faster and cheaper on insurance lol

That would be misrepresentation, also known as a form of insurance fraud. If discovered, they can cancel your policy and refuse to pay certain claims. This would be real bad news for you if they discover it as a result of looking close at you after you have another crash and while you're waiting for them to pay a claim arising out of that crash.

Being cancelled for misrepresentation has a double whammy effect. It puts you in the highest risk category for any subsequent insurer. If you think rates are high now, imagine what they would be like doubled or more, assuming you can even find an insurer other than Facility to take you on.

This is why the rates, courtesy of a RBC as quoted in the Globe and Mail:

The average cost of a minor injury claim in Ontario last year was $53,000, compared to $3,689 in Alberta, $5,904 in Nova Scotia and $8,400 in P.E.I. Insurers who operate in Ontario are paying out more in accident benefits than they are taking in premiums.

wait til he gets into a car accident and the insurance company cancels his grandma's policy, plus he gets into trouble with the law, and gets sued by the other driver. after all that brag to me about your $400 insurance policy.
