How trusting should I be?

An old dude rear ended me and begged me not to go through insurance. We swapped info and he wants me to get 2 quotes and he says he will give me a certified check for the amount between the 2 quotes. How long would you wait after giving the guy quotes?

cr8tive_leo 20-Aug-2008 10:16 PM

So, if one quote was $1200 and the other was $1195, he's gonna give you $5?

I would have claimed it. That's just me.

MrX 20-Aug-2008 10:18 PM

get the $$ ASAP!

Nova_Dust 20-Aug-2008 10:28 PM

There are trustworthy people out there, but hard to come by. I was once in the situation and got my compensation as promised.

As long as you have the insurance information as well the driver's license, I think he cannot get away with it. If he is waiting for your quote, then go get one ASAP. To cut him some slacks, I would not go to dealers simply because the high cost. To forgive others is to leave ourselves some room for unfortunate mistakes in the future.

i would of went through insurance. I got t-boned in the start of the year and the guy said the same thing to me, asking me not to got through it, but i did, and when the cops came, i found out the guy had no licence and no insurance, so if i would of, i would of bin ****ed. Yes there are some people that are trustworthy, but need to worry about your self, and need to cover your ass.

phuviano 20-Aug-2008 10:35 PM

I got rear ended a couple of years ago. I didn't go through insurance as well. He seemed like an ok guy. That doesn't change the situation though. I still got his driver's license, and insurance info though. I also got a contact number. Call the number before you leave the scene of the accident, otherwise it might be a fake number. Although, you should be good with the insurance info, and license info. You could also get the VIN number of the car, just in case as well.

I got the guy to pay for my damages. Everything was fixed, no insurance was necessary. Everything is good to this day.

Save the hassle, just go thru insurance... you will be spending a lot of time running around. Tell the guy Certified cheque is not good enough, use money order.... It is cheaper for him to get you the money order and you will guarantee you get money for it as well.

lol a certified check and money order is basically the same thing.

i suggest u get a quote right away and give him a day or two to get you the money. you have nothing to loose and you can still go to insurance if he declines to pay.

Isn't not reporting an accident to your insurance company considered fraud?

I'll play the devils advocate here...

Say this guy is willing to pay cash for the repairs, but later tells his insurance company. Your insurer later finds out that you were involved in an accident and didn't report it. You get dumped and have to pay huge to get insured again. Not worth it IMO.

bbarbulo 20-Aug-2008 11:44 PM

ok wait, why would it be fraud NOT to report the accident?? iirc, YOU are a customer, and YOU pay to have insurance. whether you choose to use the insurance or not is up to you. as far as i know, if no one was injured, and damage was under $some large amount, you don't have to report it. at least that's what cops at the accident reporting center in ottawa told me back in 2000.

redwards 21-Aug-2008 01:11 AM

i think its if the damage is under $1000 and no one is injured then you dont have to report it

Thats exactly how it should be!

Unfortunetely it is not that way, in your insurance contract it states that you must notify insurance within a certain time frame of the accident. Now most insurance companies wont cancel you unless they feel like being a$$holes.

kwikb16a2 21-Aug-2008 06:55 AM

This is what i would do. I would go to a police reporting center and file an accident report. This DOES NOT go to your insurance company! This report will cover your ass if the guy fcuks off and you need to go to your insurance. But at the same time cuts the guy some slack. If he doesnt want to get a police report done then hes obviously out to fcuk you and i would go straight to insurance.

Get the police report to fall back on if the guy takes off. You never know, he might think it's $1000 damage and when he finds out the quote is $2500 he's not going to stick around.

Gallagher 21-Aug-2008 07:18 AM

i had a guy say that to me, but then when he found out the amount of damages, he went through insurance.

there are trustworthy people for sure.

DumbasSi 21-Aug-2008 05:27 PM

I believe the under $1000 rule is only to save the police the time of attending the scene of the accident. Under $1000 you go to the reporting centre, over $1000 or with injuries, they will come to the scene.

Cynikal.Mindset 21-Aug-2008 05:31 PM

I went this route 2 times...got rear ended, got quotes...it was too much for them to pay cash so I went through insurance...second time the woman ran a redlight and almost tore off my bumper...got quotes, they agreed on the amount and we met up and settled it...signed waivers to the tone of "damages were paid for in cash, no further action shall be taken etc"

but always get their information; name, number, license number, plate number, insurance, ownership etc just in case and file a report at the reporting centre

rick10 21-Aug-2008 07:27 PM

get the quote asap , give the guy 2 days to pay off. Get a police report to cover your a s s . If the guy tries to play smart go to the insurance.

Only thing is that once the insurance fix it your car it would be label as accident in the carfax ( i m not a 100% sure). So if you have a new car it may be better for the guy to pay cash and keep a clean carfax . Depends on how much damage was done to the car too

k_r_a_c_k_e_r 22-Aug-2008 07:55 AM

So whats happened since the first post.. have you got your money yet??
