If someone is giving you a car, you have to goto the ministry and register it in your name, or your parents name, or whatever you do for insurance purposes, and insured. You will need to get the car certified, and e-tested in order to transfer ownership of the car.

As far as the car being given to you, the ministry will charge you tax on the car.

You should to tell the ministry that you paid like 200 bucks, (or whatever) and get the person that gave you car to write out a reciept for 200 bucks,

or spend 20-30 bucks and get the car appraised for 200 bucks.

Then you only pay tax on what the car was appraised at.
so, if you appraised the car @ 200 - you only pay like 16-20 dollars. Otherwise you'll pay on the black book value...lets say the cars black book value is 2500, then you pay 200 in tax!

I'm sure someone in this forum can give you some more insite on this, its been a while for me, and the ministry is always changing up things...

Hope this helps..

there is a form that you can get at the ministry to have a car gifted to you and you save all taxes. You do have to both be there and pay like 20 for a justice of the peace to sign as a witness unless you know a cop they sometimes do it for free!

lets say I have a receipt that he sold it to me for a $100-$200 coz the velocity bearing and the engine eats a lot of oil. so they would believe the price.

I got the:

1. receipt for 200 or 100 cdn
2. ownership certificate
3. past registration sheet

is that enough or do i really need the original owner to come?

yes you can do that, but only if you pass the car on to another family member, like father to son.

i just did that, changing ownership from my dad to my name. i think i paid $10 for the commissioner to sign it.
