Got a speeding ticket in the US
 

Hey guys... Does a speeding ticket in the US affect my points/insurance in Canada?

Is it worth the trouble of fighting it?

(this is what happens if you are the only Ontario plated car driving a civic when your traveling the same speed as everyone else)

i heard about a agreement between different states and provinces in canada which allows their tickets to affect ur driving record here and vice versa.

u may need to head back to the states to fight that ticket or hire a lawyer to deal with it. with that being said, it does affect ur driving record.

Correct. A ticket in New York state for example will transfer to your Ontario licence. Pay it or fight it, the same way you would if you received a ticket here.

in that case... does anyone know a lawyer in NY state? I honestly think the only reason why they stopped me was cause i had an ontario plate and driving a civic... i was going the same speed as everyone else...

See they will stop any one going more them 5 mph now in the states. I say pay the ticket, and learn from this, stop speeding.

Its speeding non the less... but i was still was traveling with traffic which pisses me off

That means you were doing 132kmph in a 100kmph zone. And yeah cops some times pick on ppl that are out of the country cause 50/50 chance you wont show up in court. Its happened to a few ppl that i know here.

doesnt say... from my understanding he said that i have to plea guilty and then they send me the fine... i was going around 28 over...

so its set up so u have to show up? thats gay u must be able to just send in the money or pay over the phone.

Bottom line is that you were still speeding.

The cop doesn't have to explain why he picked you out of a string of others. He or she only has to demonstrate that you were speeding.

You trying to get off a ticket by crying that they were "picking on you" for some reason won't do a thing for you except to make you out to be a whiner unwilling to accept responsibility for your driving choices.

I have a hard time believing that you were only going with the flow.

I spend a lot of time in NYS and on the Thruways in particular, and with the emphasis that the State Troopers put on enforcing speed limits, there are not that many locals willing to do much more than 5 or 10 mph (8 to 16 kmph) over on those highways for any length of time.

The $ fine isn't on the ticket because the local judge decides what the fine will be. The fines can vary greatly from one locale to another.

You don't have to show up in person. You can send in your ticket with your signed plea of guilty, and then they will mail you back a notice of conviction along with the fine owing, plus any state surcharges applied to that particular offence.

well there u go that has to be the cheepest option do that.

Im down in NY state once or twice a month and Ive noticed that 99% of the people of the highways drive within 5-10 mph of the posted limit. There are State Troopers everywhere.

That and the penalties for traffic offences build up fast.

Every subsequent speeding ticket in an 18-month period means an automatic escalating increase to the amount of the speeding fine.

Any three tickets for speeding in an 18-month period, even just three 5-mph over tickets, results in an automatic license suspension.

Any accumulation of 6 demerit points means an automatic driver responsibility surcharge payable annually for the next three years.

Repeat speeding offences even at the lowest speeding levels can also result in jail terms of 15 to 30 days at the discretion of the judge.

Only fools and people from Ontario habitually speed in NY State. Ontario drivers in particular have a very bad reputation down there as far as speeding goes.

lesson learned... thx for your insight. I was flowing with traffic... but you are correct... they cant catch them all... It was a speed trap... there was a guy pulled over a few seconds before me and by the time the officer was completed with me there were another 3 pulled over.

ill just plea Guilty and hope for the best.

You can call the court clerk at the court indicated on your ticket and try to arrange for a lower charge or fine in advance of sending in your guilty plea. Just don't wait too long.
