I gota a question:

I had parked my car on the side of the street in a place that was legal and someone hit my car while it was parked there, and ran away... do I have to pay the deductable for the repairs... is there a standard policy insurance companies have for cases like this or are all companies different?

thanks ....

Yes, Unfortunatley there is a standard practice that you do have to pay your deductible because your insurer does not know who hit you - if they had the insurance info of the thrid party, they could proceed under whats called Direct Compensation which is coverage under your liability insurance where your deductible is waived - but they need the other person insurance info - if you do claim and pay your deductible this type of loss should not effect your rates ...... hope this helps

hey, welcome to the club..
nice of you to offer your insights into one of the more confusing aspects of owning a car..

got another question for ya, if you don't mind..

adding approximately $5G in stereo equipment..and roughly $8000 worth of cosmetic mods..
want to insure seperately from car (above the standard $1500 coverage..so say roughly $3500 for stereo and all $8G for mods)
how much and is it possible??

you need to ask your broker or agent for a higer limit on stereo equipment - depending on the company you can purchase upto $15,000 in coverage - but you'll pay for it - as for the mods, you can buy an endorsement called a 19 or 19a which apprasies the vehicle - its usually used on custom cars and older classis cars but would be good for what your looking for - you cannot insure your stereo seperate from your car becuase it is permenatly attached to your vehicle and hence would be covered under an auto policy - hope that helps

Welcome to the site, hope you enjoy it.

Like everyone else I have a question. When my car was broken into I went to the adjuster and he had a small touch screen that he used to mark the damage. When he was finished he printed a page that listed all parts and cost's. Now my question is can the general public get a hold of the database you guys use when making the claim?

Well, most of the time its an apprasier who would come out and view the damage to yor vehicle. The apprasier uses market prices for insurance only. So, in other words, you may pay $150 for a stock bumper if you wanted to buy it, insurance companies pay$75 and the shop that is doing repairs marks it up to $150 to make a profit - same thing with labour rates - $65-$85 an hour is the norm for most shops - Insurance pays about $45 an hour to shops - and to answer your questions, no you can't get the SAME lists of parts the apprasier has access to because their are priced for insurance companies - but if you wish to get a list of parts for your vehicle, you can contact your local dealer

If you want the estimate that has been done on your car you are allowed to have that, as it is your vehicle - But each company has its own database as each company works with different shops in different areas. Hope this helps

hhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmm interesting, thanks for the quick response. I was given a copy when it was appraised and went and got it reappraised by the Honda dealer, the difference was huge and they changed the pay out. I just though it was wierd how insurance tried to give me $250 for a dash when to buy it from Honda cost's over $300.

Ususally your insurance company will price parts for what THEY can get them for, and most of the time their OEM or used parts, not brand new - the only time you would get brand new is if your car is 2 years old or newer - IF you were to proceed through insurance and the dash does cost $300, insurance says they can get it for $250 and its in the same shape as your old dash, then all they will pay is the $250 - If hey cannot find the part or the part is not up to par, then they will pay for a new part to be installed

What is your companies stance on modified civics??

If reported how much does you rate increase???

What are the penalties for not reporting??

My companies stance on modified civics is as long as we know its modified AND ITS LEGAL we will cover the loss. If you do not let your Insurer know that your vehicle is modified then they have the right to deny coverage for any modifications you have on your vehicle - In their mind, they insure a 1994 Honda Civic Hatchback, stock, so thats is their obligation to you. Some companies are more leignient than others, so will cover everything, so won't. If you let your broker or agent know of your mods, you may have to pay an increase in premium to have things like a stereo, rims and bodykits covered. My advice to you is weight your options. If you are ina high risk area where a collision and theft are a norm, have your mods disclosed to your insurer and have them covered. If you get a quote of an extra $1000 (and yes I have seen this) a month to cover these mods, you may want to take a chance on not covering them due to the cost.

Just a note, some companies will not cover this type of vehicle at all, some will, I would speak to your broker or agent first before pursuing extra coverage

Question

I‘ve always had a lot of questions to ask about insurance stuff but was too scared to ask my broker! It’s really good to have you here now!
My question is if I park my car somewhere totally legal lets say a parking lot and some one hit me! Do I have to call the cups right away or what should I do so my insurance covers the costs! And as long as I pay my deductible would it affect my rates? Because when I talked to my agent last time she told me that they raise the rated depending on the number of claims you have. But wouldn't that count as a claim? And if I move to Vancouver would my rates still be high because I have had an accident in Ontario or they fallow totally different procedures?

Call me synical.......but......what credentials do you have? What courses did you take? ect......

Not ment to offend you, but I would just like to know. I have a couple of aquaitances in the insurance field here in Ontario, and I'd just like to see what your answere to the above questions will be.

Being on an open board an all, it's hard to believe what someone says without getting to know them.....in prerson.

ie.....I already knew most of the above info that you stated from the amount of time that I have had insurance (over 10 years).....I ask alot of questions of my agent.

Once again.....not ment to cast doubt on your "job".
