engine swaps

was wondering if engine swaps were conisdered illigal?. got one of those vehicle report notices tonight and the cop was looking under my hood saying "its fancy" he said during the inspection there looking for modifications, and according to him ALL modifications were illigal. suspension (coil overs) would they be illigal as well then?
wondering if u guys could help a guy out in a stressful time? lol was also told that this is just an safety inspection wich would be excellent because as far as i know a engine is completly unrelated to safety!
thanks in advance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you "neglected" to re-install ALL emissions controls when doing that engine swap, the motor would be considered illegal.

If your coil-overs were installed in such a way as to adversely affect the safe handling of the vehicle, they too could be considered "illegal". Lowered, rock hard suspensions with limited movement can be quite unsafe on uneven road surfaces.

Any modification could be considered illegal if it adversely affects your car's handling to the point of instability on ordinary roads, pollution control systems, or your exhaust noise level.

Hey EGMAN, did you get a drive clean after you did your engine swap? What car do you drive? What engine swap did you get? Engine swaps are not illegale if done right and they don't exceed emissions. But the loop hole I see is that if the cops report you to your insurace company, they could drop you and black flag you so that no matter who you go to for insurace they will quote you a lot more as you would be now consider a high risk driver. The same as if you were drinking and driving.

People have reported on this form about getting droped by insurance conpanies for having an intake or muffler. It's just stupid. Did you report your engine swap to your insurance company? I'm 29, drive a 97 EK coupe, clean driving record, and I wanted to swap in a 1.6 DOHC (SIR engine) for my stock 1.6 SOHC. No turbo, no supercharger. I must have called like 20 insurance companies. None would insure me. Even tho guys on this form say insurance companies will, I'm yet to find one. Without paying out my A**. A small premium I don't mine, but not double or triple my current insurance rate. If guys are covered with engne swaps, im guessing it was before this hype of street racing. If anyone can prove me wrong, I welcome you to prove it. I would be more concerned about your insurance company, than the cops.

If I were you I would try changing your insurance to a company that will insure you with the engne swap. That way the cops can't touch you.

Can anyone give EGMAN feedback on this? Anyone know of an insurance company that will currently insure you openly knowing about an engine swap?

EGMAN, keep me in the loop dude. Best of luck.

In my experience you are not going to find a single company that will touch an engine swap, even if the engine came stock in your car in another country. Insurance companies in Ontario seem to think they can be different from the rest of North America. In the states they pay half what we do, even though there is more accidents and in many states cars are in much poorer shape than ours, California doesnt even have a "safety" and the vast majority of insurance companies dont give a **** about mods. Put an intake on your honda and they will drop you like a fly and treat you like a criminal up here and yes im speaking from experience. They will insure an 18 year old kid in a 240hp grand prix GTP but when it comes to insuring a CRX with a non oem exhaust and an intake, they act like your a criminal. Even after I explained to them that you cant buy oem exhausts for 18 year old cars they still didnt care.
last week i was talking to a friend from school. Shes 20, G2 license, 2004 Cavy with full coverage, 2-3 tickets, lives in bradford and drives 40K KM a year. How is it that I pay the same as her on my 88 accord with only liability, 10K Km a year, full G license and ive been insured/licensed 3 times aslong as her and I have a perfect record. I HATE insurance companies *RANT*
DO NOT tell your insurance anything, deosnt matter if youve been with them for 20 years you will be dropped and once you have that cancellation on your name, you are basically screwed for 3 years
