Contents Insurance?

Here's the story. I am currently shopping for a new place to live. I am pretty sure I have found what I want, filled out an application & am now awaiting an answer. One of the requirements for this place is Contents Insurance. I don't have any of that Jazz right now. Can someone please explain to me how it works? Does it involve someone coming over & checking out what you own?

Sorry, kinda lost on this matter. Thanks in advance.

Pe@ce..

Ummm, kind of off-topic... Me thinks they want you to get insurance on your new place perhaps?

You're not gonna get a mortgage on a house without house insurance.

Normally they don't come and look at everything you own. You can usually get it setup over the phone.

I did my condo insurance with the same company as my auto insurance and we did everything over the phone. He basically just asked me how much money I'd need if I had lost everything in my house.

Registering expensive products with the manufacturer is a good idea so that you can prove you actually did own the item if something happens (LCD/Plasma TV's, etc.)

Me too. They just asked the approximate value of the extra stuff I have. My company has a set amount that would cover everything in the house if something happened. I pay a small extra premium to cover expensive items like my wife's rings, my watches and our home electronics.

Yes, contents insurance will protect everything inside in case of fire (ask about if it is covered in the case of a flood). Most times the insurance will cover accidents that happen in the house (in case someone tries to sue you)
