Any experienced HTA violators?

Sup TTC

Im new here. Hopefully I can learn something from u guys. Ive had my car semi-doned up just in the past year. Already cops are out to get me. They even told me straight up. FAK them pigs.

Heres my problem/tickets:

1. unnecessary noise - frmo the muffler, but they didnt confirm the loudness with any sort of device.
Plus the notice of trial paper said unreasonable noise/smoke/sig.device, does it matter the offence is different frmo what the ticket says?

2. obstruct plate - i had on those ugly blue covers. it was a gift so i put it on. but even Canadian tire such places sell them right?

3. fail to surrender permit for vehicle - it was a copy in fax waxy paper, but it wasnt that clear.

The total bill is $110 each and total330
Any suggestions or past experience?

Hi, first of all welcome to the club

As for your tickets:

1. the noise level is entirely up to the cop. he can deem whether its too loud or not and does not need to take sound readings (there's no set loudness limit in ontario). what you can do is take a sound readings yourself at idle and WOT and compare it to some stock sports car figures (from magazine data etc). as long as your car isnt louder than say a viper then you should be able to get off.

2. i believe the ministry of transportation sells them (or used to anyway). if you can verify this then all you have to do is tell them that's where you bought it and they should let you off. i dont think using Canadian Tire is a valid excuse because they arent government owned/operated.

3. not sure on this one....maybe someone else can help here?

1. There is actually a set loudness on how loud your car can be. It can be up to 75 dBa I believe. It says it somewhere in the HTA. Or was it 85 dBa. One of those 2. Rock concerts are usually 110 dBa. You'll go deaf at about 150 dBa. Car alarms are about 90 to 110 dBa. Planes taking off are about 120 dBa.

A 1500 watt hair dryer at about 10 feet away from you is about 55 dBa. That should give you an idea of how loud you can have your car.

2. Usually they have a disclaimer (just like those PIAA headlights) that the plate covers are to be used off road only or something I believe.

3. Usually you're suppose to have the real thing in your car at the time but incase your insurance company has mailed them to you already but you have not recieved them.. you should be fine.. however.. it's **** *** luck to get pulled over before they arrive. When I bought my car.. it took the dealership 4 days to get it ready.. I didn't pick it up until 6 days later, however.. my papers arrived 3 days after I purchased the car. So that goes to show.. my papers arrived even before my car was ready.

1106. (1) Every vehicle, other than a motorcycle, shall be constructed so that:

(iv) in the case of a light-duty vehicle, not in excess of 80 dBA when measured in accordance with SAE Standard J986a, "Sound Level for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks", (July 1972),

where a value of 2 dBA, to allow for variations in test site, temperature gradients, wind velocity gradients, test equipment and vehicle production tolerances is subtracted from the highest average noise value recorded during the test described in the publication referred to in subparagraph (i), (ii), (iii) or (iv), as the case may be.

SAE Recommended Practice J986, Sound Level for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks (August 1994), or SAE Standard J1470, Measurement of Noise Emitted by Accelerating Highway Vehicles (March 1992), the exterior sound level does not exceed 80 dBA when a value of 2 dBA is subtracted from the highest average sound level recorded during the test, in the case of a light-duty vehicle.

Regarding the muffler charge, i wont comment as of yet, little more clarification needed....

For the plate covers, just remove them and take a dated picture to show the prosecutor that you removed them. It'll be dropped 100%

Ownership, at the same time provide the original slip, and give them the "I forgot it in my wallet, and had a copy in the glovebox" excuse, should be dropped completely too.....

dont worry about what you told the officer at the time, he wont be anywhere near you when your at the prosecutor

i'm almost positive this isnt true. i've searched thru the HTA enough times and i've never come up with a db limit on muffler loudness. please post the section you are quoting from.

I havent read anything about noise dBa limit in the HTA after reading through it, but Transport Canada has it in their Motor Safety Act

Section 75 of the HTA has the muffler thingy but no dBa. I think I read what 1sl0civic quoted and I got that confused with the HTA
My bad.

But none the less.. you can't be in excess of 80 dBa or whatever was written. To be honest.. even stock super car mufflers don't go as loud as those "fart pipe" after market exhausts that are pretty much straight through. The HTA says you can't use straight through mufflers I think.

that's a nice diss right there

NoSpleeny, regarding the straight through exhaust, they dont mean the muffler being straight through ( high flow ). It is in regards to running a straight through exhaust pipe as in running without a muffler/cat/resonator.

First off. Sorry bout the TTC thing.

Sup T C C : )

Thanks for replying: SiR-Racer, [1sL0CiviC], NoSpleeny

1.muffler: how am i suppose to measure how loud the muffler is to compare to the dBa limit?

U guys think if i show the court a picture with a silencer on will work?

2. plate cover: I will take the picture with it off and use the 'ministry selling them' as backup

Any suggestions where i can search if ministry actually do?

3. Ownership: I will go with the 'forgot in my wallet' lie i guess

Thanks for replying again.
I am open to any suggestions.

I keep the whole HTA in my car now so if they try some crap with me, I got some defence.

What I dont understand is their definition of a hollywood muffler. Anyone know exactly what their talking about?

My guess would be that it means some sort of exaggerated muffler that's like really loud or something. Hard to say... these people making up the HTA must have been drunk when writing it

im sorry to hear what ur going through..oh by the way it's TCC not TTC . anyway, about teh blue covers, just because stores are selling them it does not mean it's not illegal...stores are allowed to sell anything, if the cop is an *******, yes they can give u a ticket..for not being able to read/see your plate properly.

DASHIT, ( LOL.......nice handle )

You pretty much dont have to tell them that the MTO sells the tinted covers, use it as a backup if they say that they will reduce the fine ( very unlikely, shoud be dropped ).

If possible, take another picture with your stock muffler on, should be also dropped. ( easy way out )

Oooooh and the ownership being in the wallet, it was man.....who said it was a lie?

1sicsol

this is a hollywood muffler, domestic only mufflers i guess
