if your came equipped with an airbag, and you removed it for an aftermarket steering wheel, yes it is illegal. If it wasnt equipped with an airbag, you can have a any wheel u want :D

if your airbag was deployed in an accident, and you replaced steering wheel with aftermarket ( no airbag ), you should be fine {can anyone confirm please?}

oh i didn't know about that
i have a MOMO Apache Steering wheel, and i havne't had any problems with it, i guess since 1slocivic said that if you don't have air bags in the first place than it wouldn't matter.

So the short answer is..

If airbag equipped get in an accident and do what you want...

i heard that too, deploy airbags in accident, woohoo aftermarket steering wheel..hehehe:thumbup:

well, at least i have an excuse..what about you uy_civic? :D

Whiplash 24-Dec-2002 08:28 PM

i spoke with Big Jeff about this one night and..

from what i remember, you ARE allowed to change it, but if yer ever to sell the car you will have to re-install the air-bag.. (well that's what i got out of our discussion anyway..)

[1sL0CiviC] 24-Dec-2002 09:45 PM

i also remember a discussion once that if unfortunately you do get into an accident where the airbag could have prevented injuries to the driver, the insurance company can deny paying for the injuries sustained.

( applies only for cars that were initially equipped with airbag )

I'm not sure if any of you guys compete in car audio but as far as IASCA is concerned, removing the air bag is a no-no too.

imported_Team Rukus 26-Dec-2002 08:01 PM

All vehicles after 1995 (i believe) were equipped with airbags as a standard

Removing an air bag eqquiped vehicles steering wheel to replace it wit an aftermarket wheel is illegal.

Insurance has the right not to insure you, insurace wont pay for injuries caused by this,

dealerships wont install the aftermarket wheel either for you if car was equipped with airbag

if vehicle was in an accident and air bag deployed it is still illegal to not put an airbag equipped wheel ESPECIALLY if insurance is paying for the replacements.

If cought by police and hey are hardasses they can tow your vehicle away for driving an unsafe car or atleast give you a ticket.

Getting a record like that can affect your insurance rates, insurance reputation etc... and not worth it.

Chances of getting caught by police is slim
Chances of gettin into an accident and air bag deploying is high (especially in the winter)
Chances of inurance not convering it is high too if you dont got airbags
so is it really worth it?
