blown shock?
Hey guys,
i noticed this morning after getting to my car, that the driver side rear shock was a little off. The car was sitting way down (almost on the ground) on the back corner, first i thought it might have been a build up of ice under the car weighing it down, but after cleaning the ice and jacking up the car the wheel did not come down. is it possible that it just froze with the extreme cold of late? or is most likely blown?
With either diagnosis does the shock have to be replaced, if so does anyone know if its possible to order single shocks to replace aftermarket ones or do i need to get a whole new set?
Thanks
Jordan

The struts dont support the weight of the car or determine the height in most applications. The springs do that. A blown strut wouldnt really change the ride height, but a problem with a spring would.
You mentioned just recently that you have coilovers, so maybe its possible the perches the springs are on have come loose and they are turning themselves loose. Check those.

Last night i wanted to inspect the situation a little more, so i jacked the car up and took the wheel off. The wheel had stayed up in the wheel well (relative to the other 3), so it took some jigging to get it all the way off. The spring was almost fully compressed, but everything else looked normal. I decided to replace the wheel, and lower the car so it was resting on the remaining 3 wheels, and see if the weight of the tire as well as being in a garage would cause the strut to extend and go back to normal height.
This morning i noticed that it had returned to normal height, and after lowering the car completely it has maintained the weight of the car and at a normal height. Would you think the strut is blown, or is it possible that it had frozen or seized from the cold weather?
