Loooooooong exposures

I recently took some 5 min exposures, and they came out weird.
Looked like a bunch of burnt out pixels.
take a look.

Naturally, I want my looooong exposures to look like some of this stuff http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=5+minute+exposure&s=int

is it because of my camera? Bulb mode cuts off at 5 minutes.

^ Yeah, but still, my camera is not as good as his and I can take better pics at night. Are you sure it's not a setting on the camera that is not set properly? What's your ISO set to?

I can get nice noise free shots too, but once O go above like 3-5minutes it pixels out on me. Understandable, but if image is sized down it can be fixed. slightly.

it has to do with noise reduction settings built in to the camera...dslr cameras have built in long exposure noise reduction algorithms which is why they take so damn long to process a long exposure...your nikon might have this too trance take a look...but for the most part this is what happens with digital cameras as it tries to expose the image and noise and grain appear

yea it does have NR+clear image. Don't know how I missed that.
Now lets see how much it helps.
quick test.

seems to help, kinda blacks out the noise.

I tried finding some info on this and nothing really.
So thanks C.M.

Nikon FTL!

Buy a Canon, you can turn NR off!

Also, get your ISO down as low as possible.

Edit: I see it's already at 100... New Canon FTW

LOL
I'm buggin the guy.

Seriously though. There could be a sensor problem. It doesn't have the same "power" as an SLR does.

He's on a low ISO, NR on or off it shouldn't be that bad. It's like asking why the car is slow. There could be lots of reasons, and if this amount of noise isn't "normal" for this camera, send it in for service!

on a puny point and shoot sensor that kind of noise is normal for a super long exposure....its just the way it works
