I am actually thinking of also upgrading my camera, but I am still contemplating on which one to get. I got my heart set on the D40, especially since Henry's has it on sale. I think that's what you got, right Adrian?

Shhh, yes, people think I take good pictures... they think it's an expensive camera.. no one knows it's just a D40.

I love it, for the price and what you get, can't beat it. Get it from Henry's for sure. They back all their sales with awesome support.

The SB400 is an excellent flash too. It's $150 or less.

If you get the D40, you can buy the battery pack off ebay for $25, it let's you go for about 10,000 pictures before a recharge. (or more)

the sb-400 is a hair better than the on-board flash
not saying it's not usable or doesn't fully cater to what you bought it for, but it doesn't deal with off-cam shooting at all so any expansion to your off-board shooting utilizing it is nil
imo, minimum sb-600, at least it can be used as a slave down the road

and yes, the d-40 is a surprisingly good little camera if you can work beyond it's few not-fully-thought-out lackings
if you need to shoot quicker (ease of manual setting changes) i'd go with the D-80/90 or beyond

this is in no way argumentative, merely insights related from experience

< uses the D40 fully manual without any problems. (very easy manual mode changes)

You learn your equipment, and it's capabilities.

battle vistek and henrys against each other...one of them always has it on sale and they will price match

go for the D60 if you can but the D40 is a decent little camera...I miss my D50, now that was a solid Nikon piece

Nooo, it's D40,D80,D90... the d40x and d60 were the silliest ones Nikon came out with.

I have thought more and more about getting a digital SLR, but my problem so far has been justifying getting one of these when I can get the latest point and shoot (even the high end ones with manual modes) for free from my company.
I get almost every other week a new camera to test, so how can I justify spending $500 on an SLR? I guess I will have to wait and see what sales Henry's will have this month.

As for the flash, I have a Vivitar already, which has been great with my current camera.
