Getting XTI, what lens?

I'm going to be picking up a Canon Xti soon, but I heard the lens that it comes with is not that great. So im going to buy the body and get a lens, I'm not to knowledgeable on lenses yet, so I just want to know what everyone would recommend??...hopefully from experience. Or what I should look for for this lens.

I'm looking for a all around lens, good for night and day, some zoom, something that's good for everything and I can learn on before I buy lenses for specific things. Looking to spend $250ish

Thanks

It's usually cheaper if you buy the kit (comes with the 18-55 lens). I priced the XTi for just the body alone and you might as well throw in a few more dollars for the kit. Play with it and if you decide to get another lens, you still have this one. It's interchangable, so you don't have to be stuck with just the one lens. Right now, I got the 18-55 lens that came with my kit. Another package is the duel lenses that comes with the XTi kit. The 17-200 and the 18-55. It's around $200 more for that kit. I'm happy with the 18-55 b/c I'm novice. When time is right, I will get another better lens.

yeah, get the kit. you'll save more. in fact, buy it at best buy when they have those crazy sales and they sell it for 799 or something like that. thats what i did.

the only thing is they didnt have the 75-300mm lens and gave me the 55-250mm lens instead for $40 more. if you check the price on the lenses by themselves there is about a $80 difference for the 55-250mm, so i saved.

hell i even got the bag kit combo that comes bit the battery grip and extra battery for cheap while i was at it.

I'd actually wait a little longer. The canon Xsi is coming out soon. Once the Xsi comes out, I'm pretty sure the Xti will go down in price.

Its not available yet silly. It says "Pre-order". It says available in April on Canon's website. Other websites say its suppose to be out April 15.

Yeah it's not out yet, and in fact the release date was pushed back.
I think about 1 month to go.

Get the body and the IS 18-55, throw in $100 and also get the "nifty-fifty", 50mm f/1.8.

Play with that combo for a month or 2, then see what your needs are. Do you need more on the tele end of things? Do you need a wider lens for interiors? You can get a lot of decent lenses for under $500. Personally I'm waiting to buy the Sigma 10-20 $619 right now.

10mm fisheye $899 (ouch)
17-70 $379
18-200 $469
30mm f/1.4 $529
55-200 /4.0-5.6 $199 (great value)

So you need to know what you're going to use it for. The 55-200 is going to be almost useless indoors. Whereas the 30mm, while more expensive, is going to give you fantastic indoor photos and great portraits (with bokeh).

Play with the IS version of the kit lens. I bought it and it's great! Stop it down to f/8 and you'll get super sharp photos.

Just wonderin why Canon went back to the cheap SD cards for the XSi instead of keeping the CF cards for the current XTi?

It could be. Makes sense if it is, but i'm pretty sure it's just the SD format.

Lol. Probably the price of the CF compare to the SD. They would think people pumping in all the cash for a nice Canon camera would be able to afford an extra few more dollars..

thanks for the suggestions, I guess I'll go with the kit then. Ya i have been watching the prices for the Xti for like a year now lol, I know the Xsi is coming out soon and that's when I'm planning to get the Xti. The prices have dropped a little now, but not much of a deal, but I think sooner or later they will, hopefully sooner.
When I get comfortable with the camera I want to get a fish eye, telephoto, and a micro. Time to start another savings jar.

its cuz all the new entry cameras are made cheaper than the older ones...SD cards are cheap...also its easier for n00bs that have p-n-s cameras to make the transition to a dslr where they can use the cards they already have...new entry cameras FTL!!!

they add all these gimmicks to them and remove or hide all the things you really need

ah, my bad, thought it would be out already.

the XTi is gonna be the base model now and the XT is getting dropped. so if you want you could get a XT for a better price.

i myself was thinking of trading my XTi for a XSi but i just got a 8GB CF card so it would be pointless for me trade up the camera.

I was thinking about getting a Xsi, but from what I read, it will probably cost me almost a grand, plus memory cards ect..That's a little more then I want to spend.

Oh and I don't want easy easy, I'm saying that's what the public wants. I'm going to know this camera inside out, Iv already done lots of research on it.
