A Day in New York City

A few shots from my december trip to NYC. Most shots taken while riding the tour bus from times square..down and about lower manhattan, midtown and then back to times square. Its one glorious place to take photos, shopping and sight seeing.

Camera used was a Canon rebel xt with the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 lens. Most shots were in AV mode with f7.1..iso 100-400. Photos are untouched and straight out of the camera (exception being the b&w ones).

Comments welcome.

Starting 8AM at Times Square - 43rd st/7th Ave/Broadway

The Grand Macys Store - 131 34th St

Random NYC architecture - you cant get enough of this

One of my fav shots of the day....

A building in chinatown

Approaching the site of Ground Zero - West Broadway and Vessey St

Looking down into the site through a hole in a curtain wall. i had to line up to take a photo through the hole since there were other people ahead of me. the site itself is not visible from the street level.

in the foreground, you can see the remanants of the foundation of the towers attached to the bedrock. this is 70 ft down from street level...in the background...2 and 3 world financial place bldgs (offices of merill lynch and american express) are visible. this complex was heavily damaged when chunks of wtc debris was blasted across the west highway and onto the buildings. in the background, you can also see the slurry wall (which miraculously survived when the towers fell) which is on the west side of the site.

In this picture, if you look close enough...you can see the remaining core columns of wtc 2 (the south tower)..the ones organish in color

The new complex to be built....

View of lower manhattan from across the hudson river from jersey city. using a tele lens here....

View of the Empire State Bldg and the Chrysler Building in midtown

Nice pics. I've never visited NY yet, but I want to. Your pics make me want to go there now.

just one word describes NYC...fantastic. if you stay in manhattan, its more fun rather than being in brooklyn and elsewhere. although other cities are worth a visit too.

auto? haha....read my first post above. all shots were taken in AV mode. the sharpness and clarity was due to good photo light, a fast and sharp lens, steady set of hands and the right composition although i struggled with lighting on occassion since the sun was constantly getting blocked by the highrises from one turn to the other.

i will never ever ever use the auto settings again....i have devoured my user manual and started to play with the white balance, iso, shutter and aperture and it is awesome...i was worried about messing things up in the camera but now...look out!!! the photo challenge shot i took was my first "experiment". i dont use ps for anything but adding the boarder.

Nice shots, though in my opinion it represents a cliche stereotypical representation of New York not reflective of the true essence of the city.

Thanks everybody.

Rajiv...what do you have in mind? NYC specially Manhattan in my opinion is more symbolic of its architecture, among other things. No other city showcases the fusion of design and art better than Manhattan in the form of old and new for over 200 years. From a photography perspective, there are parks, meuseums, shoreline etc. but still the most prominent subject one can find are all these buildings which are just fascinating.
