Unhappy Camera taking blurry pics

I'm having a problem with my camera. Its a canon sd1000. I don't know much about cameras and I cant seem to find my manual. So I'm hoping someone can help me out. I find it takes great pictures during the day, but at night it takes really blurry pictures especially when I turn my flash off. Is this normal? I'm not taking an action picture... its a still object. Did I change a setting? The camera has never been dropped so the lenses aren't shifted.

Please help meeee!! Thanks!

Does the camera have auto-focus? You have to press the button half way and you should hear the lense move. Also on the screen, you should see a square that shows at which point it focuses on. Go through menues and see if you can find something to do with focus or auto focus.

That's normal. LOL
I have the same camera btw.

Durign the day you have much more light going into the sensor. So the shutter doenst need to open that long.

At night, or in any darker places. The shutter needs to be open longer in order to grab enough light to compose the pic. This is normal. Now, it is near impossible for somebdoy to hold their hand perfectly 100% still. Your heart (hopefully) is beating. Therefore, you produce a slight "shake". Now, at night/darkness, since the shutter is open longer, there is MUCH higher chance that your natural "shake" will blur the pic. Not to worry, this is true even for my cameras.

Edit: Sorry, i forgot to add. At night, or in a dark place. Turn on the flash. Also, if you're really bothered by this, you can get the new Canon SD1100IS. The IS stands for Image Stabalization. It works wonders. It will dramatically reduce the shake, BUT it still will not completely compensate.

My camera looks exactly like this.

alternatively you could bump up the ISO to 800 and get a more clear pic but with tons of grain

Ok thanks guys

didn't realize blurry pictures was a normal thing at night haha

I would get a better camera but my boyfriend just bought me this one a year or so ago because I dropped my other camera and it cracked the screen so when I told him this one was taking blurry pics he got all pissy so I was just making sure.

thanksssss

a tripod is a great accessory to use for taking any pictures.. ANND if u have a tripod you can take a photo of your friends with YOU in the picture...

score!

haha ok well than the best thing to do is

when you're taking photos try to hold your camera similar to that, and as you press the button slowly exhale to minimize camera shake

Yeah that.. or use other objects to steady your shot, lamp post, tree, wall other non moveable objects.

Even set it on timer and place it on a flat surface or something, it helps.

Haha that looks so funny. yes a good stance will help. I press my elbows to my side/chest, but it'll be useless if ur shutter is 1/30 or 1/15 and slower. Flash if u can. I'd rather have a non-blurry, ugly-flash lit pic, then a dark blurry, ambient lit one.
