you're signature just about sums it up. except the faster part. 115 hp from 2 liters of displacement? or 170 hp from 2.8 liters of displacement? or 150 turbocharged hp from 1.8 liters? anyways.... all those figures are absurd.

but yeah, we've had 2 Mk4 diesels recently, and many many many more in the 80s and 90s vintages

its all about the torque.. I admit.. the the 1.8L and 2.0 NA motors are weak.. but to there credit, the 2.0 can keep up the SOHC VTEC's.

my vr smoked GSR type R preludes all day long with minor upgrades...

VW will always be behind in hp output, but they're learning..

we ran a 99 (mk3) MR6 golf vs a 2000 Prelude, the prelude walked on it all day. I drove both cars multiple times, the Prelude pulled on the Golf every time, so it wasn't driver skill... both cars were new at the time (both under 40K kms).

but the VR6 has that great sound to it.... the 6 furious pistons at 15 degrees LOL ... it's a sexy sound!

ok, this VR6 had Neuspeed chip, Neuspeed P-flow intake... and then some suspension work. It was a 5 spd.

I don't remember the details cuz it was like 7 years ago almost. but we did rolling (from like ~20, and ~60), from a stop... any way we could think to do it. even at rolling 20, where you'd think the torque from the VR6 would give it a good pull through 2nd gear, it maybe got a nice start, but then you had to shift, whereas the Prelude could go towards 7800 rpm with ease... so I think the rpm band gave it a real advantage. plus the lude has 220 hp, the vr only rates at 172, so I guess it wasn't a surprise.

i have a 98 golf k2....total nightmare...cel that nobody including vw can get rid of. my gas gauge is all messed up...in the winter it doesnt work, in the summer its empty as soon as the needle touches the 1/8 tank level...door locks freeze. the list goes on.

i have it slammed on tien springs and illumina struts with motegi rims. cops dont even look at me...thats the biggest difference, the cops. vw's dont have that stigma associated with it like the hondas. power is brutal...like the gas mileage. but i wouldnt trade it for a honda, and i love hondas.

hummm... maybe I can help u out come summer (i can't work in the cold)

VW's are really hit and miss with reliability.. i don't know why some or bullet proof and others are brutal
