I do plan however, to call both the dealership and Mazda Canada and complain.

How dumb can a person really be to overpay by that much ??
I mean, there's an MSRP list price on the thing....lol

On the other hand, sometimes customers even think they got ripped off if the dealer profits $1000 over thier cost.......

Go figure.

It's always the dealerships fault right ?
Is it okay for a Porsche or Ferrari dealer to make $20,000 gross profit on thier products then ??

A salesman's job is to make as much money as they can on the product they sell.

If OMVIC or the gov't thinks this is being ripped off, then they should have fixed pricing for everything !

Robb 16-May-2010 01:24 AM

To add, if she has a mental disability (like she claims), then she shouldnt be behind the wheel of a car !

I hope they get fined !! shi t like this really pisses me off

you are comparing apple to oranges

car should of cost 40 000 , the lady is getting charge close to 60 000 , therefore the dealer is making like 50% more of what they should be making ... Even at 40 000 ( regular price of the car) they are still making a profit

Lets say a ferrari cost 150 000 , dealer tries to take advantage of the customer (like in the mazda case) and charges him 50 % over the price tag , so now the same ferraris costs 225 000 .. Thats 75 000 profit over the price tag (not 20 000 like you imply)

Its not the ferrari is allow to make 20 000 and mazda only 1000 , it all depends on what the price of the vehicle is , the bigger the price tag the more profit they will make..

Just like when you buy a tv for 1000$ and the store makes 200$ profit .. You can not compare that to the profit a car dealership makes on each car..

And not , there are laws , and any sales person is subject to the law , thats why they can not charge whatever the hell they want. Thats the reason the dealer may get fine and this is going to court , because they can not do whatever the f they please...

read this again

The Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council, which regulates new and used car dealers, took action after she complained. Its investigation found she should have paid about $41,000 for the vehicle — which wasn’t even new.
“In my eight years here, I haven’t seen a case like this,” said Carey Smith, the regulator’s director of investigations. “The deal was way over the top regarding pricing.”
Smith has charged Mazda of Orangeville and two senior employees with breaching Ontario legislation that protects consumers. The dealership could face a fine of up to $250,000 if found guilty.

Robb 16-May-2010 01:49 AM

Ok then let us look at the oil companies profit, government's tax profits, insurance companies profits, banks profits etc etc..
No one is/was doing anything about them, were they !

Is it fair for them to make all that money off of us ??

Those are the real ripoffs !

trunk_munkey 16-May-2010 10:01 AM

If that guy looses his job I'll hire him in sales....... thats awesome. Imagine selling a 149 subwoofer for 1000.
stupid ppl should get taken advantage of, what ever happened to survival of the fittest?

There's a difference between 'stupid' and 'learning disability'. This lady had a learning disability and the salesperson realized that and took advantage. If this was Germany or Russia 1930s-40s this guy would have already been in a gas chamber.

trunk_munkey 16-May-2010 12:56 PM

don't get me started. there should be a gas chamber. there definitely wouldn't be so much crime and people getting taken advantage of. our society caters to the disabled and the dishonest alike. start putting people in the electric chair and see how long crime rates rise. if you do good you wouldn't have anything to worry about.

For those interested in the law side of this:

There are actually no laws that I'm aware of governing the pricing and profits that a dealer can make. This is why dealers and brokers that specialize in rare, desirable, limited-run, and early import vehicles can make 100%+ profit on vehicles because people are willing to pay the markup since they 'just gotta have it first'.

The charge against the dealers is the “engaging in unfair practice by making an unconscionable representation,” contrary to the provincial Consumer Protection Act.

The Provincial Consumer Protection Act (cited from British Columbia) states:
Unconscionable acts or practices

8 (1) An unconscionable act or practice by a supplier may occur before, during or after the consumer transaction.
(2) In determining whether an act or practice is unconscionable, a court must consider all of the surrounding circumstances of which the supplier knew or ought to have known.
(3) Without limiting subsection (2), the circumstances that the court must consider include the following:
(a) that the supplier subjected the consumer or guarantor to undue pressure to enter into the consumer transaction;
(b) that the supplier took advantage of the consumer or guarantor's inability or incapacity to reasonably protect his or her own interest because of the consumer or guarantor's physical or mental infirmity, ignorance, illiteracy, age or inability to understand the character, nature or language of the consumer transaction, or any other matter related to the transaction;
(c) that, at the time the consumer transaction was entered into, the total price grossly exceeded the total price at which similar subjects of similar consumer transactions were readily obtainable by similar consumers;
(d) that, at the time the consumer transaction was entered into, there was no reasonable probability of full payment of the total price by the consumer;
(e) that the terms or conditions on, or subject to, which the consumer entered into the consumer transaction were so harsh or adverse to the consumer as to be inequitable;
(f) a prescribed circumstance.

The dealer falls into just about the whole section. I can almost guarantee that they will get their asses handed to them in court, and they completely deserve what they're in for.

a learning disability but she was smart enough to go to multiple dealerships to compare pricing, she knew exactly which department of the gov to complain to and she got it in the paper? there seems to be a bit more to the story than the papers let on...

:dito:

I read in the paper and she said she was "very confused" and on heavy medication. What if she hit or even killed someone and she says shes confused due to medication.

Which of course could have been all suggested from a third party.

Ummm officer, i got so confused and thought it was a green light and kept going and caused major accident and killed a baby (just for dramatic sakes).

i dont think there should be any excuses, someone should be helping/overlooking her (family or friend)
