The End: Deer vs. SiR

So, that's it for me and the moded Honda scene. I have been loosing interest over the past year and now it has come to an end with the end of my SiR. I have to spend money elsewhere, on a house, rather than on modificatons. I'm in the market for a new car now. I'd like to get a used S2000 or a new Si, but realistically I'll probably get a used GSR. I'll still be cruising TCC! Anyways, here is the story...

I was driving alone down a rural road on the outskirts of Hamilton last Friday night when a deer ran out in front of me. I was driving with my high beams on because there are no street lights along this road. The forest is very close to the side of the road; not a lot of clear area to the side of the road. I’m sure most of you guys know how fast deer can run and jump! The deer must have run out almost along the side of my car, then very last second in front of me because I didn’t even see him coming. I remember seeing a large male (~400lb) deer suddenly in front of me, so, luckily, my instincts told me to hold on and drive straight, staying in my lane. I didn’t want to swerve at 80kph! I smoked him then stopped a few metres down the road. I turned around and pulled over at the scene of the collision. I turned the car off and got out a flash light. It was a gruesome sight! There were deer parts and car parts all over the road. I remember being able to smell the flesh, like in a butcher shop. I could see a large piece of him on a fence. I suppose I hit mostly the rear half of him so he was amazingly partially alive…or it could have been just nerves; disgusting nonetheless. I didn’t really know what to do so I called 911. The operator took down the location so he could send someone to clean up the mess. I was able to drive the car home 5km…good old Honda! The next day is when I took the pictures and called the insurance company, garage and filled out the collision report. A few days later I was informed that the car was written off! I bought it 15 months ago! It was a 1999 Civic SiR. Another EM1 bites the dust. I feel lucky to be alive though. A few people told me that they know or have heard of people dying from the deer striking them! The deer flopped on the driver’s side part of my hood/headlight then hit the driver’s side pillar and down the side of the car; taking the driver’s side mirror off. I took a bunch of pictures, some are pretty bloody. I included a few below to show you guys what a deer collision can do; the not-so-bloody ones. Remember to be aware while driving at night in the country! The officer at the station said they get quite a few in Spring and Fall…some resulting in death…of the occupant.

Before (the wheels are for sale, check out the FS section)...

After...

Glad to hear / know that you are alive, for materialism can always be replaced.

Sad story, but definitely has a happy ending(you're alive! - Haha).

As long as you're not leaving Honda or the scene, can't go wrong.

Best of luck in the future

Glad you are fine. I guess you can't part out the car since you are getting compensated right?

Ya, bad deal for sure eh! I was actually on Harvest Road in Greensville. And the insurance company bought it off me. I wasn't notified of any buy-back option so the car is out of my possesion. I'm bring the ownership to them on Saturday.

What an awful experience. It must've been pretty traumatic for you during those first few minutes after it happened. Glad you didn't get hurt too badly after impact like that. Sorry about the SiR.

how does that not look like a write off?

new hood
new headlight
new side mirror
frame damage
and probably some things under the hood need to be replaced or fixed.
paint everythingincluding probably the bumper and door or parts of it. not sure what that wet spot on the ground is but that could be anything.

i can see that being a write off.
