Another quick tip; you should leave the valve cover at least just sitting on the engine to cover the valve train while you work on the rest of the car.

Will help keep dirt, debris and anything else out that could be easily dropped down in there.

Take my comments as hate or not, a lot can happen even in 3 mins. Too loud to stick around? How many people now have a bad impression of a civic owner thanks to you? Take my comments as useless but if no one every tells you that your doing something wrong, how will you ever know any different? The only difference between what I'm saying and what Mike said is that he's telling you how to fix your car and I'm telling you how to not **** people off while driving a civic. You said the cars not safe and too loud but yet you go rip around the neighbourhood in it anyway. Is it insured? if not one person reports you and/or a cop sees you and you get booked, your screwed and for that part I don;t really care, good on you but the fact is that kids like you get all amped over their new rust rocket and get booked and then next year the insurance companies hike the rate even more for civics because of the number of claims against them. My rates went up $80/month despite the fact that my record is clean and I have 0 points against me and 0 insurance claims for just that reason.

You don't need to rev your car to know it burns oil either. First off you bought a 20 year old civic. 2nd it's riced out already from the previous owner so you know it's been beaten and 3rd there are ways to check for oil consumption in a motor without ever setting bald tire to the street.

Basically the parts of your thread about you doing stupid **** that can cost us all for insurance and makes us all look bad, yeah that pisses me off and trust me, If I were face to face and not online, I'd be much harsher about this and not censor myself. But the fact that I'm telling you to do some reading on things BEFORE you break them is just constructive criticism. You wanna post a build thread and you gonna get both sides of the coin, or should we all just ignore that you so stupid things and give you a proverbial BJ for doing nothing special? DO your parents throw you a party every time you remember to wipe too?

^Touche. Well said.

In my previous post, by "haters" I meant people hating the project itself, just to clarify. But yeah, I agree and understand where you're coming from Dustin. There is a reason young males pay through the nose on insurance. And when I was younger, I was also a fine example of that, I'll admit.

I understand what you guys are talking about, and yeah I agree. It's my first car obviously i'm going to play around with it a little bit. Not the smartest thing ill admit but like i said whats done is done. I work my *** off just to pay for tools and parts so obviously im going to be more careful taking things off. If you don't like what i do then don't read this thread simple as that.

13.01.2010

Woke up at 6am this morning to head downtown. Bought some more stands, a torque wrench and a few others. Too cold to do anything outside and im off to work for 10 hours.

Today was a lot of work on the interior. I want to clear up the entire dash in 2 days so i worked for about 6 or 7 hours today. Most of the pictures are for my use but anyone can use it to see were their connectors go or see how everything is hooked up.

removal of a/c, heater and misc parts

finally cleaned up all the glass and sound deadener. Very easy to clean with a vacuum. Must have taken at least 2 and a half minutes.

How the interior looked at the end of the day

May I ask what's the point of removing the interior harness? And what are your plans with the car?

Im going to be cutting rust out from under the floor and around the rocker panel. Didn't want to risk cutting through any of the wires. Also i want to understand more how everything works under the dash. Experience is always better then theory. Call it a waste of time if you want, but this is much better then pictures and text.

15.01.2010

Removal of the the radius rod and axles were much easier then i expected once i removed the rotor. Impact driver + ball peen hammer work wonders on rusty screws.

The rest of the time i was stripping down the engine so i would have less weight when i remove it.

How everything looked at the end of the day

Engine is ready to be dropped and since i dont have a hoist i'll be using this method.

well few things, you removed the radius rods and now you will need alignment, could have just removed the subframe that the rods connect to and opened up more room.

hell, if you have a buddy, disconnect the transmission and lift the damn engine out. It only weighs like 180-190lbs at most, just good luck installing that sucker back in

Edit: If you wanna learn more, remove the head, the block will be very light to lift out of the car. Just saying, no crazy elevation/angles of the car required.

Edit 2: if I was you, i wouldnt let the upper control arm just hang there like that. I like to keep my balljoints in order. That necessary stress/angles

Might want to check the short axle. The one CV boot looks stretched. Might just want to check and make sure that CV joint didn't get pulled apart.

The previous owner told me it needed alignment anyways and i noticed it pulled to the right when i let go of the wheel. As for the boot that mark is there because i accidentally poked it with a screwdriver. I popped it back into place and it seems fine. I'll be replacing both anyways.

Right now im deciding whether to swap in a d15b or a zc.

My main concern for the zc is that parts will be hard to find.
For the d15b parts will be cheaper to find, but i'd have to swap to obd1 and get a new ecu.
I'll be swaping sometime in march when the weather gets to atleast 5 degrees but need to research asap.

I'll have more updates when i return from school, i bought a few tools yesterday so i can continue the tear down.

If you are talking about the dohc zc iirc most parts are usable off d16a1 integra engine.

Why not throw a b-series in. Few bucks more but you get a bit more power also. B20 is the best bang for the buck and you will have a ton of fun with it.

Oh the memories this brought back. Reminds me of my ED6 build in the early 2000's. I still got a number of random parts if you need something, and a mint hatch...

Just sat here reading this build thread and everyones comment for about 30 min.

I truly respect this guy taking on this challenge...yes it's unnecessary to remove everything but the guy wants to learn, and that's one of the best ways. The real challenge will be putting everything back together.

regardless what people are saying dude keep up the work, this is your car and do what you want...if you want to put a 3 foot spoiler on it and have TV's on the outside of the car go for it, it's your ride. (I know your not doing this but it's a point) Do what you want with this car.

Keep up the work!

awesome, this is the best way to learn. Keep up the learning

My only recommendation would be to buy/get the actual Honda shop manual. They make all the difference. If you need any info its in there. Wire pin outs, harness locations, torque specs all the good stuff.

Have to give praise on a well-documented build thread through pics and description.

You've taken on a lot, it's a total learning experience, you must enjoy what you're doing and learning. On that note, take the words of the guys here that are giving you helpful suggestions (praise or criticism), they know what they're talking about.

All the best to you, have fun.

16.01.2011

Bought new parts and finally cleaned out a few tool sets.

17.01.2011

The puller is really hard to use, no matter what happened one of the jaws slipped or the pusher piece would always turn. All i managed to take off was the upper control arm. Probably since my hands wear numb was a cause.

18.01.2011

Got back to work on the engine. Removing more pieces so it would be lighter to drop.

Previous owner is really something. The alternator screw was too long so why not add 8 washers rather then find a proper size. Maybe its just me, since i want everything near perfect.

looking cleaner with everyday

20.01.2011

Tried for remove the head for weight reduction. Wouldn't even budge after a light hammering. Removed the camshaft and rocker arms to try loosening the seal a bit.

21.01.2011

Nothing made sense to me so i just went with taking a giant prybar and hammering at the bottom of the head. Finally came off after a good minute.

Now for everyones favourite.. senseless removal.

Found that one bolt that was holding the heater in place. I've become a lot more calmer since i began this project.

Placing the harness back into place will really be difficult. Rather have that then accidentally slicing through.

Fuel line riped after trying to unscrew from the chassis. Looks like im going to making my own.

My friend is bringing his hoist over really soon, so i can remove the engine the proper way. Once disassembled I can place in my basement and take apart completely. Gives me something to do while its too cold to work
