swap to Synthetic oil and Brown Tranny Fluid

2002 Civic. DX

Alright... So I've deceded to switch my oil from regular 5W20 over to Mobile 1 0W20 Synthetic. It says on the bottle "Made for Hondas using 5W20"... So i figure it should be good.
My question is, what should i do to prep. my car for the new oil? Just a straight change? Change to new oil.. run for a while and then put in the Synthetic?... Buy one of those Engine Flush bottles?... Use SeaFoam I've heard soooo much about but know absolutely nothing about it?
Also type of oil filter? Should i use some sort of Synthetic oil filter? or just a Honda OEM???
What is the oil change period??? Eg. How many Km's? or Months?

MY manual says to change my reglular oil every 8000km... I have never done it... been pretty **** bout changing it between 4500km and 5000km.

Any Help guys?

Also my auto tranny... Fluid is all brown??? BUT i just did a flush and fill bout a year ago almost to the day. and since then i put on around 15,000 to 20,000km... on the car... Why is it brown? i plan to change the fluid again.. but is there something wrong i should be worried about?

Thanks again!!

the 5w20 is a synthitic base oil so its not same with 0w20.its good to use same grade of oil reco. by honda. ur car oil change interval is at 8000 klm. but its good to do it every 6000 with the oem filter. regarding ur tranny oil being brown , what kind of oil did u used last time. its good to change ur tranny oil once a year regardless of mileage and sservice interval.

use only honda tranny oil

good luck

.. ok so i should just stick with the 5w20??
Cause when i was looking @ the 0w20 Mobile 1... it says in bright red writing that its made for honda's to meet or exceed OEM standards.
Right now on the car i have a Fram Double Guard. and if i went over to Synthetic i was going to use the Fram Double Guard For Synthetic.... But what your telling me is that there would be no point?? I hear a lot of about people saying Mobile 1 is the "sheight" and they wouldnt use anything but...

Oh and the tranny fluid was oem honda... well thats what they told me @ Mr. Lube when they did it.
Now.. final question.. why is it sooooo important to use only OEM fluids?? Whats wrong with ATF made by other companies? Lets say i go with a name brand one.... like Royal purple or something... ??

car tech 26-Nov-2004 10:22 PM

honda design thier own fluid,ie motor oil, tranny oil, brake fluid

take ur car at honda dealer, they knows only honda. never trust those none honda place, not that much money compare to none honda place anyway. if mr lube used honda tranny oil in ur car uve been charge twice the price.

yeah... that was before... now i do 90% of the work myself.. i dont trust many people but myself now... hehe..

If you are going to use synthetic use either Amsoil or Redline...

VTECRACER 28-Nov-2004 04:44 PM

AMS Oil is the "Sheight!" :)

I use that in my LUDE, love it. And I use OEM filter with it, as directed by Joe at Altech.

imported_Mr E 28-Nov-2004 04:51 PM

AMS Oil.. really... what about all the hype with Mobile 1?

kwikb16a2 28-Nov-2004 05:54 PM

there really is no hype, its a good oil but it depends what your doing with your car, racing? jus normal driving? If your racing it i would say go with amsoil or redline but for normal driving mobil 1 is more than enough :)

imported_Mr E 28-Nov-2004 05:56 PM

cool... yeah no racing... its an Auto.. :(... just want to keep it running smooth so when im done school i can unload it for top dollar.. Any thoughts on the type of oil filer i should be using?

shlammed 29-Nov-2004 09:36 AM

oem

imported_esp 29-Nov-2004 09:51 AM

you idiot, you never told me that you were gonna do this. What did I tell you when I switched to Mobil 1 Synthetic? Do you listen at all? Use regular oil!
IF you are were ever going to change to synthetic, you should do it when they change your timing belt so that you can ask to reseal/gasket your head/cams/valv cover. But since you won't change your AUTOMATIC belt until 180XXXkm, so then why do it?
Just use regular oil!

oh and techies correct me if I'm wrong. But don't hate.

Oh and tinder, when are we gonna rice my car? hahaha.

Yakoori!

I made the switch to synthetic with no further work being done. Mobil 1 is fine for normal daily driver... severe duty like winter or short trips, I'd use Amsoil.

imported_Mr E 29-Nov-2004 10:41 AM

Harro...
Look here my Asian friend...
I DONT EVER recall you telling me to do that.. EVER...
But the reason for going to Synthetic is in the long run its cheaper and better for the Environment since i will be changing my oil less regularly. Also it cant hurt? Will only make my little un-moded Auto run better... which is all i can hope for... not like im gonna do the 5spd swap on it... Also engines with Synthetic actually have more hp over regular oil.. and again.. with the auto thats the best i can hope for.
FINALLY if racers use it to protect their engines under EXTREME conditions then for my bass pumping daily commuter it's gonna work wonders. soo :P

listen chunder,

Do what you want. At your mileage, I was afraid that your seals would leak oil. If you want to take that risk, go ahead.

Actually what am I talking about.
Let's split on bulk buys of Mobil 1.

hmmm, B, would switching to Amsoil from Mobile 1 be ok? I didn't know that Amsoil had benefits from heavy winters.

bbarbulo 29-Nov-2004 10:54 AM

not for the cost, it wouldn't be worth it as much IMO. Though Amsoil is a better oil, unless you run your car real hard, Mobil 1 is just fine. It's the minimum I'd run in my car... and it's just enough. I mean, $28 per oil change vs. $45 per oil change... and the rest of the car still continues to wear at the same rate. So saving the engine when the rest of the car has become junk is... pointless. Know what I mean?

imported_Mr E 29-Nov-2004 02:38 PM

Chunder!!! CHUNDER!!!!!.....
OH i'll give you CHUNDER!!
So i should just stick with Quaker State 5w20.... and not bother with the mobile 1... also i would split the case BUTTT... i use 0w20 Mbl 1... you use either 5w30 or 10w30...

Also... just outta curiousity... i have been told that in general Synthetic oil leaks outta the seals and it is something u cant aviod.... ??? LMK..
OH Esminder... when ever you want... we bought those LED's but u never have time to put them in.. you tell me when and i'll be there.

bbarbulo 29-Nov-2004 03:18 PM

not quaker state... mobil 1 is the minimum I'd use... and if it says 0W20, then use 0W20, NOT 5W20.

and no, synth oil does NOT leak. my car is dry as ash, it's never leaked a drop of oil ever.

imported_Mr E 29-Nov-2004 06:55 PM

... no no.. Stock oil is 5w20..in honda manual it says to use 5w20.... BUT Mobile 1 Synthetic 0w20 states in bright red that it is made for Honda's that use 5w20.
OR should i go with a synthetic that is 5w20? Theres a few out there now...Castrol Syntec has a 5w20 and so does CT brand 5w20 and also QuakerState. All have synthetic 5w20 oil's... would those be gd to use? or ESP says stay stock.. and others say go synthetic.. SO.. i ask... if i stay stock what is best... and HONDA OEM is too much money for me.. and if i go synthetic is Mobile 1 the only way to go? opinions please...
