so i checked my fluids today....
it's my first car so i really don't knw too much about maintenance.
anyhow i thought it was time to look under the hood and check some fluids. here's what i found........ coolant - empty........ wiper fluid - empty........ engine oil - below the dip stick line......... brake fluid - looks ok but has white streaks in it........ power steering fluid - same as brake autotrans fluid - couldn't find it i know, i know, i'm an idiot. i refilled the wiper fluid, added coolant and am gonna get some engine oil. (synthetic) i just had a quick question.....the engine oil, i can just add it right? does it matter if the one currently in it is not the same that i am about to buy? and for the brake and power steering fluids.........do i need to get the system purged and cleaned by a mechanic? oh yeah....i just had an oil change 2 months ago....when i got winter tires. so it's not like i don't take care of the car at all........ |
Did you check the coolant from the over flow tank or the rad?
|
overflow tank.....the radiator had fluid in it (green)....can't remember if it had white streaks too.......
|
Dont waste your money on adding synthetic oil unless you are all ready running synthetic in there, better you if its close to the time to change to oil then just change it.
|
you can just add the power-steering fluid in and the brake fluid as along as they werent both bone dry, you dont want any air to get into the system

so what should i do about the overflow tank? does it matter so long as the radiator has fluid?
|
fill coolant in the overflow tank to the marker.

If you just had an oil change 2 months ago and it's below the line already , you might wanna get ur car checked for oil leaks or it might be burning oil.
Tranny fluid doesnt have a dipstick for civic. You gotta open up a bolt on the side of the tranny and look at the level through there. |
your brake system has water in it, and needs to be flushed and have the fluid changed.
the power steering - same thing coolant just top off the overflow tank oil, add more regular 5W30 Castrol GTX for now, change oil at 1st convenient time. |
