shifting problem

i got this problem when i shift sometimes it won't go smoothly eventhough i press the clutch all the way down. and is it the case that for civics, you can't shift to first gear when the car is moving? cause sometimes when i'm in the 2nd, and not actually wanting to engage in 1st but just put the gear in 1st, it won't allow me to. unless i'm in full stop, then it's back to normal.

i've changed the transmission oil, but it doesn't help.
any inputs?

It's called first gear lockout, and it's there to avoid ppl throwing it into first, over reving the engine and.....well you get the picture I hope....

lotusvale 28-Nov-2004 08:43 PM

oh ok yea.that's what i thought of something like that. but i still have some problem during other gears though. just like sometimes it's not smooth from 2->3. 3->4 is always smooth. i guess 4->5 is okay. somebody said linkage maybe?

bdotdan 29-Nov-2004 01:58 AM

you can shift from 2nd to 1st if you double clutch

lotusvale 29-Nov-2004 02:30 AM

how to do double clutch?

imported_gatherer 29-Nov-2004 02:34 AM

what do you need to double clutch for?

I down shift to first every time I slow down to a speed that is at the top end of first gear. just need to blip the throttle to rev match ... double clutching is rev matching while releasing and pressing the clutch... too much extra effort if you ask me.

shuddup :D

bbarbulo 29-Nov-2004 08:47 AM

that's how ppl break their trannies... they bend the shift forks by jamming the car into 1st gear while rolling. :tsk:

does it matter how fast you try to shift? I mean is it smoother if you go more slowly? what kinda fluid are you running?

imported_kIeRaN 29-Nov-2004 08:54 AM

i usually just downshift down to third gear, then put it in neutral and use my brakes.

imported_gatherer 29-Nov-2004 11:21 AM

Bruno,

yes speed matters... if I was going to fast when trying to down shift I'd hit that same lock out. however by blipping the throttle it seems to do something that allows the gear to engage easily.... I don't know how it works it just does. and yes I agree force should be avoided....

lotusvale 29-Nov-2004 11:55 AM

ok..i think there's a little bit of misunderstanding here....
well i'm not trying to engage in 1st gear from 2nd or 3rd. what i meant was that since my friend's type s or mini cooper, they could technically shift to 1st without a problem, i was wondering why can't i. now, my other problem is that sometimes eventhough i've press the clutch all the way down, the shifts gets stucked somehow. one situation is like this:
traffic light, the car slows down, i press the clutch and hold it (cause i know it'll be green soon), green light, i try to shift to first then it goes 3/4 up. then i'd have to release the clutch and do it again and this time is fine.

bbarbulo, did you mean my tranny oil? i use honda's.

bbarbulo 29-Nov-2004 12:22 PM

well, given this thread and your other about the "heavy" feeling clutch, I'd assume there is a problem there somewhere. Either your hydraulics are shot (master and slave cyls for the clutch) or your clutch was not properly installed. So if you solve one problem, the solution for the other should follow.

lotusvale 30-Nov-2004 12:20 AM

yea..that's what i had in mind before. ok i check it to honda. thx again everybody

imported_t_dot_SiR 30-Nov-2004 01:43 PM

i had that same question too about can't getting into gear 1 from gear 2 when i'm slowing down... but then i find out what's the point of going to gear 1 if i know i'm going to a fully stop or if i'll start moving again without needing to fully stop........ get what i'm saying?

i only leave gear 1 for launching the car.... i'm not into race or something, so i don't need to hit 7000 rpm starting from gear 1... i just neutral the car when i'm coming to stops (or if suddenly the traffic moves again)... i go into gear 2, rev, and just go again since my car was still moving..... i don't really care about gear 1 unless its a stop... maybe i'm doing this all wrong...

for mini, maybe it has a different mechanism, that's why it can get into gear 1 while the car is still moving.....

imported_Cablerat 30-Nov-2004 03:18 PM

My H22 is like this also..

It won't go into first unless your almost completely stopped.. However, if you give it some throttle and then try to throw it into first before the rev's drop back to idle it'll go in very smoothly.

This must be a USDM option only.

My JDM j1 tranny dose not do this. When i downshift from getting off the highway on the offramp, when im almots at the lights i will downshift allt he way into 1st to slow down.

Also, if im crusing in 3rd, and i want to downshift and take off for whatever reason i can drop in into 1st anytime i want, this also works from 2nd.

I sugest replacing every washer/spacer and bushing in your shifter linkages and shifter rod. See if that tightens things up.

Only gear you cant go into when moving is reverse.

For tranny fulid my prefernce is GM syncromesh.

imported_rbjeepthing 30-Nov-2004 04:17 PM

Blipping is known to cause main baering failure my buddies fried his b16 twice doing this and no he isn't hitting the redline.

sorry i'm not sure what u meant by "bushing in shifter linkages & shifter rod".
how much would the washer /spacer costs? what do they do?
sorry i'm still newbie in this kind of stuff

Those are all the rods and conection hardware that run from the bottom of your shifter to the tranny itself all under your car.
I doubt this is your problem though. usually when your bushings are going for a ****, your shifter will just move around freely and loosely all the time. bushings will just stiffen it up.
