new transmission rattle/grind
 

i just changed my stock transmission with another used transmission in my 96 civic, replaced the clutch and release bearing as well, and i machined the flywheel myself
all of that seems to work excellent, my clutch no longer feels like its 200 pounds and there are no grinds, im happy about that

but there is a fairly loud grinding/rattling sound coming from the transmission, i know the gears arent grinding because i can slip it into any gear smootly, and it rides smootly, except the sound

the sound doesn't occcur constantly, and it doesn't happen at only one gear, it happens in any gear, not neutral, while driving

it seems to happpen only at certain rpm's , or at certain throttle positions

and i thought it would be worth a try, but i dont know if anyone will have an easy answer for this one, feel free to ask questions, id love to fix this

ok I'll take a stab at this .... (checking the obvious here) you did put Tranny Fliud in it right?

other then that you will probably have to take it all apart... I'd suggest a sethescope and find out if the noise is int he bell housing or the transmission casing. that would help you point out the issue.

ok, tranny fluid is fine

im running out of ideas, the tranny itself seems fine, when i kick the clutch in and its still in gear, there is no grind, so the tranny seems fine i suppose

i at first thought the flywheel was catching on something, but i now realized it cant be since it stops when i press in the clutch

so, its gotta be the clutch rubbing on something on the edge, or something to do with the pressure plate

quick question: does the pressure plate have to be aligned somehow? thers 3 dowels and i just put it in, seemed to slip in there just fine

could the release bearing have something wrong with it? it just put in a brand new one that came with the clutch kit, seemed to slip in fine

anyways, this is an extremely annoying problem, and i dont think i wanna crack it open again, so i think ill just live with it until this summer and put in an integra engine or something

well my thoughts are as follows..

1) did you use a clutch alignment tool to line everything up?

2) did you properly check the level of the surface for the flywheel?

3) as long as dowels are in the dowel holes no issue there

4) Release bearing. see when the clutch is engaged, the release bearing is floating free . when you press ont he clutch disengaging the clutch the release bearing is pressed up against the pressure plate. This leads me to think you didn't properly hook the releasebearing onto the throw out lever ... it's also possible that the release lever got hit while trying to put the trany in sending the release bearing off...

anyways looks like the transmission has to come out again

yes, clutch alignment tool used

the flywheel was machined and i know it was machined right since i did it myself

im pretty sure i installed it right, i already knew how to put it in, it works, and i also checked the diagram in the haynes book to be sure, and it was exactly the same as the picture

but the fact that it could have gotten hit and knocked loose of the release lever is something that could have happened is an interesting thought

im surprised bbarb hasn't commented on this yet
