How to flush the coolant?
 

Winter is approaching and I have watered down coolant in my 93 Civic. I have some OEM coolant, but need to know how to exactly flush the system? (rad and block)

Open the drain on the bottom of the rad.
On the block there is a large drain plug on the left side(looking from front of car) of the exhaust manifold near the tranny.
That'll get most of your coolant out except for what maybe in the heater core.

Hey thanks for the tips. As to the removal of the engine drain bolt, is it safe to do? I read and even been told by the Honda dealership that they do not remove the engine drain bolt as it tends to leak afterwards. Even heard of people breaking these bolts. Is there a way to flush the system eithout taking off this bolt?

Now Im starting to wonder if letting canadiantire handle this coolant flushing be a better alternative. Or maybe purchasing a flush kit, that has the T-connector, coolant tester, and necessary fluids.

You seem pretty worried about doing this. It may be better in your case to have someone else do it for you.

i replaced and flushed my coolant a few months ago...drained it all through the bolt at the bottom of the radiator....all went well and no leaks at all.

ok, this reply is a bit late, but i guess someone might do a search. you can flush all the coolant without removing the engine drain bolt. just empty the rad. fill it with water and run the engine untill the thermostate opens. let it circulate the water through the engine, then redrain the rad. do that a few times...all the old coolant is gone. then one last drain of the rad and fill it with undiluted coolant. use a half of the total cooling systems capacity for a 50/50 mix.
or...get a flush kit that has a hose connection you can splice into a coolant hose. that allows you to hook up a garden hose to the system. you actually back flush the system this way. the old coolant comes out the top of the rad. so you need to direct it away from the car, since its not good for paint.

hey fred that is a good idea if your gonna do it home. w/o removing the bolt from the block but. but for raczky you should just let a dealer or like you said canadian tire to handle it.

best is to take it to a shop n get ur whole cooling system flushed. just draining ur rad wont help u much.
