I changed my fuel filter a few days ago and noticed that my gas mileage is not as good as before. I'm pretty sure everything was installed properly and I'm not driving any different.
Could the increase in fuel consumption be due to the colder weather? Its not like super cold out there either... |
yes indeed!!
in the cold weather, the computer takes into account the IAT sensor reading and the CTS reading (intake air temp and coolant temp sensor)... based on those two parameters (plus MAP or atmosphere press sensor for elevation) it determines the amt of gas needed to start the car. In the cold, cars are hard to start... normally. However, ECUs are now tuned to spray more fuel to help eliminate hard cold-weather starts... therefore, until the O2 sensor comes online (warms up) the car runs quite rich to prevent leaning, sputtering, and stalling. Remember, colder air means denser air, which means more oxygen to burn. |
great explanation bbarbulo
i guess my brand new sticky on the pavement winter tires also add to poorer fuel consumption too, eh? |
it all factors in... how much worse are we talking about??
I got 293 kms for 33 liters of gas in the city... that's pretty bad, but I warm up the car in the morning, and drive short distances... but on the highway I get like... 700+/- kms for 43 liters of gas. so it's all relative, you know? |
I also have noticed a decrease in fuel economy sicne i changed my plugs, cap, rotor, oil, oil filter, coolant etc. Most likely it is the cold weather but would there be any other factor?
What would you say is a good for a 92 cx bruno? I think i get about 350KM to I believe its a 35 liter tank, thats all city driving basically with alot of hard accelerating :D |
350 in the cold and in the city is not too shabby! And your tank holds 45L according to the Helms. Heck, even my 90 dx holds 45 liters (tried and tested).
and no, a tune-up does not decrease mileage |
would incorrect plugs or incorrect gap on plugs effect it?
hmmm ive filled both my civics up when they get into the low fuel light zone and ive never come close to 40L? Who knows? |
yeah, platinum plugs will do it... and yeah, incorrect gap/incorrect plugs will do it too.
yeah, when the light comes on, there should be a 5L reserve, but on some cars the light comes on too early for some reason (prolly fuel slosh). I went 405 city kms and then put in 43 liters in the 90 dx. |
hmmm, im gonna try and get the car to almost empty........low gas light on all the time....and then ill fill it up and see how much she takes.
I am still worried about the plugs i installed in the B18B1 cause the part number wasnt identical but the guy at parkway looked at the number i had and gave me these?:( |
I was getting about 550 city kms in my 45L tank before I changed my fuel filter and now I'm getting about 500 kms per tank.
I'll be monitoring the effects of different cold temperature ranges has on fuel consumption during the winter and keep you guys posted. |
550 city kms? wow.. i get like 425-450... i know my oxygen sensor (secondary) is bad, so i think ill be snagging one from werk in the next few days
