Few questions about my new SI
 

Hey guys I purchased an 08' SI yesterday and just had a few small questions to ask you peeps.

So it says 91 octane reccommended. I just filled up 1/2 the tank with 94 today. Whats the best choice? Im guessing 87 is not a good idea.

Also oil changes, looks like the dealer just changed it its pretty clean. How many km's is reccommended for a change? Also should i switch to Synthetic?

The car currently has 12K on it. Sorry these questions are probably stupid but it says little about them in the users manual.

Its literally not a scratch on it inside and out. Its like some1 just kept it in there garage for two years. I can't get over it.

22K on the road it cost me. I think the MSRP in 08 was 27K so i think i did alright.

OK *update!
I checked the owners manual and it just goes by the "oil life meter". Says to change it when it reaches below 20% oil life. No km figures! This must of been made for freakin idoits lol.

mines at 100% so far.

I had an 06 Si and I have an 07 Si now. My 07 has 105,000 trouble free kms. The interior plastics scratch and scuff pretty easy and the fabric on the seats wears out fast, but otherwise its a great car.

91 is all it needs. Putting in anything higher is a waste of $ and wont benefit anything. Ive even put 87 into it on occasion and it doesnt really run any differently.

Oil changes I follow the maintenance minder. When you get to 15%-20% its usually around 7-8000ks anyway so its pretty accurate. The codes of numbers and letters recommend other services (filters, tire rotations, etc) but I just do stuff on a more normal basis.

Synthetic isnt needed, but I found that when I did use synthetic, the car would get about 50km further to a tank. More importantly though it ran much smoother during the winter months with the synthetic.

3 things I would recommend would be ditching the stock Michelin tires. They suck in the dry, wet, snow, everywhere lol.

I would also suggest changing the transmission fluid to a full synthetic like Amsoil, Royal Purple, Redline, Motul, etc. Amosil being the most popular with other Si owners. The 6sp can be very fussy and alot of people with earlier (06-07) have reported problems. Mine shifts like butter, but in the winter the shifter can be a little stiff and the synth fluid smooths it out alot.

Im switching to Amsoil Synthetic Tranny fluid on thursday. I think i know what others are talking about even tho it shifts smoothly the occasional below 3krpm upshift is a little rough when cold.

I kinda like the stock tires but ive been driving beaters for so long i prob forget what good tires actually feel like lol.

You will love your car and they love mods.. Just tuned a 2006 Si with Vibrant Header, K-Tuned Intake, High Flow Cat and a 2.5" exhaust and the damn thing made 227hp with a tuned Flashpro. The power you can make over the stock ECU is just crazy.

I just sent my oil away for analysis. There's a company called Black Stone Labs in the the States that will tell you everything you need to know about your oil.

Synthetic is better for the winters, I to use Amsoil. I used royal purple and my engine blew up ($8800 later). I highly doubt it was from the oil, but it leaves a very bad taste in my mouth.

I use Motul in my Rear diff. P90A it's mineral so not a synthetic, and I use Motul Synthetic for the transmission.

Of course your shifting will be 'sucky' when it's cold. The Viscosity of the oil is thick and slow moving until it's at proper tempature.

I run 94 Octane, though my car is tuned for 91. I fear that some stations have a bad quality of 91, then my car blows up, again. The higher the octane the higher it's detination point. That's why high compression engines (like yours) use 91. However, you have what's called a Knock sensor to retard your engine.
a Knock is a detination inside the cylinder(Too much preassure/heat your gas explodes inside your engine). So if you use the wrong gas, your engine might knock or sense knock and retard your timing.? (I'm pretty sure it's the timing, Martin or Mike will correct me lol)

Im not really looking to mod I want to keep the car stock. maybe in intake next year and upgraded sound system thats about it.

I changed the trans fluid to GM synchromesh since it was the only thing I could find around me. And only running 91oct but i normally visit gas stations that have alot of traffic. I can see 91 sitting around for a while or using questionable gas station brands could result in greater chances of bad gas.

So far so good!
The only problem now is a creak in the middle dash over small bumps but no biggie. everything else is showroom cond.

91 octane is perfectly fine for your vehicle, so don't stress if you can't find 94.

I wouldn't put GM synchromesh in a bran new honda transmission. I only recommend using Honda MTF at my shop for honda/acura's.

The creak is warrant-able if you go back to the dealership.

Just a small 'FYI' You would meassure when your oil needs to be changed by RPMs not by KMs... :D

About the knocking, yes. Basically detonation is when the fuel/air ignites before it is supposed to. This is generally quite hard on an engine as the fuel is igniting while the piston is at full velocity during it's upward motion on the compression stroke. Studdenly being hit by a huge force in the other direction is not good as you can imagine. Knock sensors are designed to detect even the slightest amount of pre-ignition or detonation and it adjusts the timing accordingly to prevent it from causing damage.

I had 3rd gear pop out twice in the 1st week i owned it. changed to GM synchro never happened again. And its definitely smoother shifting as well.

I dont know if i want them taking apart my whole dash trying to locate this. Its not really a big deal or loud for that matter. I think im going to leave it be. Not a fan of other people touching my car or taking apart the dashboard and putting it back together! :S

I do have Warranty valid till Aug 11' though.
