I did a search on this topic as per car forum etiquette, but didn't find anything, so please forgive me in case I did overlook a thread.

I'm curious, has anyone under consistent driving conditions over a period of a few years experimented with different brands of oils and observed how fast or how slow the oil life % decreased on their computers? If so, what major brands of oils were the winners and/or losers?

How does the oil life monitor system function anyways? Is it a sensor in the crankcase that monitors running time, engine revolutions, or solvent content in oil?
