Why is the Paint Sticky? (Krylon Fusion)
 

I bought Krylon Fusion the other day and began painting some interior pieces in my car. It came out really good on the hard pieces (ie. center counsole) but on the pieces above the three pasenger seats (where you hold onto) it is sticky and has been for the last day.

Does anyone know why it is like that?? And if you have any solutions in fixing it.

I might do a single clear coat over it, hoping it will fix the problem, but I dont wnat it to be any more glossy then it already is.

how thick did you go??

best is to do thin coats and let it bond to the part (dry) before hitting it again..
at the same time ya have to really make sure the parts are super clean.....

I cleaned the pieces with paint thinner, and wipped them really well..

I only put one thin coat on it... it so thin u can still see the grey through it...

I cleaned all the pieces the same way... and they came out good...

Im guessing this is a different material from the rest.. but im not sure...

Has anyone else had this problem??

I had the same problem when I used the krylon fusion on some pieces. Put a bit of clear coat on it and it should be fine

u cant paint rubber (like the holy **** handles) the paint will make them "melt" and be sticky and crap...what colour are u trying to paint it?

i painted the vinyl on my door panels. a year and about 3 or 4 clear coats (also a krylon product) later it still gets sticky in the summer, i think the paint doesn't do very well in the heat or something cuz it seems fine in the cold. i haven't had any problems with the hard plastic though, i think the paint just doesn't do well on vinyl with heat, maybe it should be lightly sanded first even though the can says u don't need to sand!? the clear coat did help it a bit but i think you're pretty much stuck with it getting sticky in the summer.

What kind of paint should I paint those pieces with then??

I am trying to make them black...

Does anyone know a paint brand that will not get sticky in the summer??

i used red krylon fusion paint from canadian tire, then for clear coat i used some type of krylon clear coat in a small can i don't remember exactly what its called but i also got it at ct

rubberized materials dont handle paint well at all...especially ones that are used like holy sh|t handles...when they get hot the pait will get sticky then somebody grabs it and takes half the paint off on their hand...I really cant see any product to paint rubberized plastic that gets used and is expected to hold up, the rubber itself in the summer gets tacky so...best of luck

I did the same thing last year.
The Holy **** handles and the shift boot don't hold the paint well. You might be able to, although I haven't tried it yet, use an adhesion promoter.
Don't take my word for it though as I'm usually talking ****.:goof:

Do you know if the dash and the door panels will get the same result ( sticky) ??
All the rear panels and hard pieces pick up the kyrlon fusion really well... but the dash and door panels are softer then those peieces...

the dash and door panels are vinyl covered right? if so I wouldnt suspect them to be sticky (especially with a clear coat) its only rubber things that dont take paint well...cuz the solvents in the paint melt the rubber and I suspect that fusion has a stronger solvent so it bonds to plastic better than other paints. for the door panels you are better off wrapping them in new vinyl of your choice in colour (it will look better and last longer) and for the dash a good prep and clean and paint should be just fine

some automotive paint suppliers will make you a spray bomb to your choice of interior colour, specifically interior paint. PPG has a wide variety. I don't know much about this krylon you are talking about, is it not specifically for metal?

To paint rubber your gonna need a flex agent and you cannot mix that into a spray can of paint so I wouldnt bother, as far as the dash goes, I tried it and for 50 bucks you can have the complete dash I tired to paint it i sanded it with 320 to rough it up it turned out well just the paint cant take any abuse at all, so if you just wanna sit your car at a show then its fine but if you use it, it tend to not last to long. mine is painted black its yours to experiment with for 50 bucks you pick it up, 50 plus my gas if i deliver

you should use viynl dye for the dash, doors anything viynl, or better yet rewrap them
