The truth on REMOVING YOUR OWN TINT!

first off id like to say if your thinking of removing your own tint, be prepared for a long pain in the *** job!
honestly its better to take your car to tint king in barrie and they'll do it for 125...but anyways heres how you do it...

things you will need:
razor blades
razor blade holder (you can get these at ct for cheap under 5-6 bux)
bottle of windex (maybe even two)
bottle of vim
rags

basically remove the tint film by pealing away from a corner and do this on each window...use a flathead screw driver if you need help prying away the corner...

next for the front windows and back quarterpanel windows use a razorblade and spray the windows with windex as you scrape off the residue. believe this is the fastest way to do it for these windows...
continously wipe the razorblade of any residue that might be on it...
i would also say change the blade after every window or if you have alot of blades change it often...
oh and dont worry about overspraying the windex, just wipe your interior and use an application of your favorite dash protector (personally i find meguiars gold class dash foam to be excellent)
one more thing dont worry about scraping the black edging around the window as you will not scrape it.

now for the back window
take your vim and a rag and start rubbing. this is the best way to remove the residue without damaging your defogger things. the pain in the *** is when you get down to the corner of the window between the window and the speaker deck! (on a coupe anyways or 4 door) id imaging a hatch would be much easier.
id also suggest covering the speaker deck with a blanket of some kind as pieces of residue will fall off and look like little green boogers but i guess you can also just vaccum up afterwards...whater you feel like..

then use the windex the wipe all the windows down to see what you may have missed!

i have also heard that oven cleaner works well on the back window but im not reccommending you work with that as i know thats what tint king does and its very easy to **** up your interior with it.

hope that helps
need any help just email me or reply!
thanks

haha... good writeup but if you really want it to go a lot easier, amonia is the ingredient in Windex that makes the isht come off, so if you use some 50/50 amonia/water the tint will come right off.... heck you can even put it on the tint directly and let it soak in, the **** will just fall right off, and then you just wipe the windows down with the same stuff.

as for the back window, its also fairly easy to remove the back plactic part (speaker deck i think you reffered to it as) you can get right in the cracks, and this also gives you much more room to move around and breathe, it gets sweaty back there as you might already know...you might as well anyway if your gonna re tint it

You forgot to mention that you should make sure to use Stainless Steel razor's or else you'll scratch the **** out of your window's. Also you can use a soap and water mix instead of windex, cheaper and works just as good if not better.

Yeah and I too did a long, easy to read write-up.
http://www.torontocivics.com/tccforu...&threadid=3862

Here it is again:

I did mine myself. All it took were about $15 worth of materials from the hardware store, a hot sunny day and about 4-5 hours.

Here's what you do:

Materials: single edge razor blades, 000 or 0000 steel wool (torn in pieces), bottle of ammonia, clean black plastic trash bags, plastic wrap, 2 spray bottles, and paper towels

Items to consider having on-hand: face mask (the ones used like when you're painting to avoid inhaling fumes), safety glasses (keep the ammonia out of your eyes when you're spraying), heat gun (helps soften the glue)

Instructions:

1. Pull your car out onto your driveway on a hot sunny day
2. Fill one spray bottle with water
3. Take a garbage bag and open it up so it's one large sheet of plastic
4. Spray the water onto the outside of your windows with the tint on them, then place the garbage bags flat on the surface (the water will make them stick to the glass)
5. Repeat for all the windows with tint
6. Go inside the car now and fill your other spray bottle with ammonia (also a good time to put on your face mask and googles -- ammonia is strong stuff!)
7. Cover your rear deck with a towel to avoid ammonia overspray (it does evaporate quickly though)
8. Spray the windows with ammonia and then cover what you have sprayed with clear plastic wrap -- this will prevent the ammonia from evaporating and will let it eat into the tint
9. When finished doing that, close up your car and let it bake out in the sun for about an hour or so (depending on how hot/cool the day is)
10. Start with a side window (good practice) and take off the garbage bag on the outside and the plastic wrap on the inside
11. Using a razor blade (or if it's already peeling) try peeling the tint. It should come off very easily now and most likely in one piece (use a heat gun if it doesn't or put the garbage bag back on and let it sit a while longer)
12. After you peel off the tint successfully, the window will look a bit cloudy/hazy -- this is the leftover glue.
13. Using a razor blade and your spray bottle of ammonia, spray the window and scrape with the razor blade (good idea to have a scraper handle for the razor blade). The glue will come off without any effort at all.
14. For corners and parts where using a razor blade is risky, pull out your steel wool and use the spray bottle of ammonia again
15. When you come to the rear window, you must take care around the defroster lines. Peel slowly and in the same direction as the defroster lines (horizontally) and watch for anything else peeling. If the ammonia has done its job, you should have no problem.
16. To avoid ruining your defroster lines when scraping off the glue residue, use steel wool for the entire back window. It takes a lot more effort than the razor blade, but you will be saving your defroster lines. Use the steel wool along with the spray bottle of ammonia.
17. When done, spray your windows with ammonia and wipe with paper towels for a crystal clear window.
18. Grab yourself a brew and stand back and look at a job well done!
