Reset ECU
 

I want to reset my ECU to see if my SRS light will go off... I've heard of ppl resetting their ECUs by some fuse or something. .cna someone tell me how this can be done exactly?

Are there any side-effects of resetting the ecu?

(i tried some other way to just reset the SRS light but couldn't get the damn connector off the fuse box .. )

Just disconnect the negative terminal on your battery. Leave it for a few minuts and hook it back up. If there is a problem the light will come back on. after a while.

wow! that easy??.. which one is negative? Red or Black?? ....

by disconnecting the battery you'll lose radio presets and for newer cars you'll need the radio code from the factory to reset your radio. it's easier just to pull the fuse out of the fuse box in the engine bay. it's labelled "ecu". a monkey could do it.. pull it out for 30 seconds (or longer if you want) and put it back in. that's it.

I'd also suggest having a warm engine before pulling the fuse and afcter running the engine for 10 minutes so that the ECU has time to learn the engine again do this without touching the throttle.

i think its better if he has a cold engine.
think about it
if its warm then its runnin on normal then therefore nothing really is there to for it to learn
if its cold then it will reset so that it reprograms it so that it knows how a normal start up would be.

why not jsut unplug the ecu and plug back in?

okok.. so should i disconnect my battery? remove the ECU fuse? or the ECU plug??..

which fuse box should I be looking for the ECU fuse? The one below the steering wheel or the one under the hood?

ok well I was informed through one of those manuals that to reset it it should be warm so that it reads all the sensors in the closed loop... if the engine is cold then it's using an open loop and is not reading all the sensors and therefore not learning them all...warm is better

ECU fuse would be best so that you don't lose radio settings

eternety the fuse box your looking for is under the hood next to the battery.

I found the fusebox but which fuse am i supposed to pull?
I took a picture of the label but i can't seem to find anywhere to host it right now..

I tried pulling hte "FI E/M" fuse... is this the right now?

Here's a list of all the fuses:
FI E/M (15a)
Back up (Radio) (7.5a)
Dr Lock unit, roof (20a)
condenser fan (20a)
cooling fan (20a)

rr defroster (30a)
heater motor (40a)

I think 15A..... FI E/m I think stands for fuel injection engine maganement ... but I could be wrong so don't quote me

that's probably it... nothing else sounds remotely related to the ECU. .

when i pulled it, i tried starting the car and it wouldn't and the indicator lights on the dash all stayed lit so that fuse is probably it..

err.. my SRS is still on...... :cry:

any suggestions on what i should do? :confused:

It should say ECU.

With your Engine Off.

1. Open your hood
2. go to the fuse box
3. take off the cover
-the cover has a map of the fuses + relays, like a box of chocolates
-the ECU fuse should be a 15 amp and is in the row closest to the fire wall.
-2nd one in I believe, but check your fuse map.
4. Remove fuse
5. wait 30 seconds... check your oil, tension on throttle cable... tire wear... etc.
6. Plug the ECU fuse back in.
7. get in your car, make sure you're not in gear, start the engine.
-DO NOT REV YOUR MOTOR
-Let the ECU find its own idle.
-let the engine idle for about 2 minutes.
8. Close the fuse panel
9. Close the hood

You're finished.

This is a really simple job and should take only a few moments.

yes it would be the FI E/M

which means Fuel Injection Engine Management.

btw:

ECU

means Engine Control Unit

Pull the "Back Up (Radio)" 7.5amp fuse to reset the ECU.
